Looking to quiet my car....

I have full 3" 1pc exhaust that i welded up.... i know 1 piece, not good, but hey it's all i could do at the moment. anyways what i want to do is make it "As quiet as possible" without going lower in exhause size.... im running 16lbs right now and it's loud...

i searched here and google and found a couple options like adding a res or buying a muffler that is "supposedly somewhat quiet" but i wanna get some opinions or knowledge fomr some people im fairly used to versus random search hits on other forums...

let me know if you guys have any recommendations.

I don't know if you could find one in a big enough diameter, but what about adding a motorcycle muffler in line? Compact, light, and should work in conjunction with the regular muffler to quiet it down. I hope it works as a couple of inline motorcycle mufflers are my plan for my Tigershark project and I don't want that thing to be too loud.

I'd say put on a resonator and a glasspack muffler, that way you aren't restricting much(any?) and it will quiet it down a decent amount.

ok so if i go that route and it's still not quiet enough will a second res help?

I'll let you know how quiet my Borla Hush is when I put it on....I am waiting on the arrival of it now.

aren't motorcycle mufflers only 1.75" or 2"?

3 inch high flow cat, done. I got a magnaflow for my impreza for about $60 shipped off eBay and it got the state troopers off my back. Didn't notice a difference in flow from the butt dyno and im putting down about 270 wheel.

i'll have to take some pics, i don't know too much about exhaust but i tweanna say it has a 3" cat and a glasspack inline... i do remember some of the cat rattling in the exhaust when i put it on... made sure to get the rattling pieces out first so i know that needs to be replaced for sure... that's why im looking at other pieces.

if ur trying to be quiet, a glasspack is NOT the way to.

i would consider 3" cat <only if u need one for inspection. and get a SPT muffler or even the borla hush as stated. yes, it may be smaller. but u wont notice a power change. actually ull notice better throttle response and faster spool of the turbo. imo of course.

That's why I said I wasn't sure if you could find a big enough diameter for the motorcycle muffler (in my case, the diameter is fine as a stock OBDII EJ22 has plenty of power for a 1500-1800 lbs. car). The thing with the glasspacks is that they won't help much under WOT (muscle cars equipped with them used to set off car alarms back in the day), though I've never heard one inline with a regular muffler, either. Basically, anything that changes the volume of the exhaust will quiet the exhaust down.

I've heard some subies with the Borla Hush and they're fairly quiet. I'm not sure if you can get the muffler separate, though.
I did a full 3" w/ high-flow cat and Magnaflow muffler and it was still a bit loud for a daily IMO (perhaps I'm suffering the beginning stages of growing old, though). I still have it sitting around, if you're interested in test-fitting it to check the sound.
Either way, I would recommend some type of resonator to quiet it down.

We could check that out if you were down...

Also has anyone tried this OBX Twin loop Muffler? looks interesting

Where do you want it to be quiet? That question is important. The SpinTech mufflers are somewhat loud at idle and light load, but do not get any louder under load.

Otherwise you are trading off restriction for quietness.

i just want to keep 3" exhaust but also be under the radar as much as possible.... i know im not going to get stock sound with 3" just want it to be as quiet as i can get it... on throttle...

Well, the SpinTech is only as loud under load as light load. It still has some decent noise at light load though.

You probably seen this video, but it shows how the SpinTech doesn't get louder under load.

I already tried buying the muffler sererate. They only sell it as a system.

Definitely start with a resonator. A cat will quiet things down, but will add a little restriction.

A ceramic grid type cat will quiet things down since they have some restriction.

I've been thinking about getting a cat, but I would get a metal substrate cat since they are much more free-flowing. You can get them from places other than Random Technologies for a lot less money, but the cell count (or lack thereof) is what you pay for.

FWIW, I installed my 3" TBE, w/a Hi-flow cat, and THIS Magnaflow. After too much resonance @ cruising speed and noise @ WOT, I added a resonator, which made no difference.

I've since 'downgraded' to an STi axle back, which is 2.5" (actually 2.38"). It works for me and since I'm well under 300HP, not worried about added restriction.

Where did you add the resonator? How big was it?

Per my POSTawhile back: "I've had it installed for a couple of months and decided to add a resonator, but it made little to no difference. My guess is it wasn't long enough (only 12") to help, but that was all I had room for."

It's behind the hi-flow CC.

they make silencers here a link to one. idk if they affect your power i could see them adding more back pressure which depending on your exhaust some is good.http://www.yourhotcar.com/prod/Spec-D_T ... 40/772149/
this is inserted into a muffler.. which that will help muffle some sound too. but ik these work. i had an exhaust on my old 91 prelude i use to set off car alarms with the car. and soon as i put the silencer in it gave it a nice tuner sound even though without it it sounded better.
