so yesterday i picked up a 92 ss 5 speed with a broken clutch, when i was looking at the car i never noticed that i couldnt get it into 1st gear.

1st was like it was completely blocked off like the safety if you were trying to shift 5th to reverse.

as for second gear you pull it all the way to the bottom left corner it only goes in half way cuz you can hear/feel it grind when you start the engine.

the shifter has quite a bit of play.

3rd 4th 5th and reverse go in easily though.

so if i inspect the linkage/bushings when the tranny is out and replace whatever is worn do you think 1st and 2nd will line up and work again?

Also im taking out the tranny today to do the clutch, do the front cv's just slide out of the tranny if i undo the strut bolts on the knuckle and swing it aside?

thanks guys!

sounds like a broken 1-2 shift fork.

i got the tranny out today, one bushing was completely worn and release bearing was torn in half haha

the bushing that isnt pointed with the red arrow

is there anyway of playing with the shifter with the tranny out to see if will go into 2nd and 1st?

so far i can go straight back and fourth (push in and out) and feels like 3 positions netrual, 3rd and 4th.

what motion is 1st and second?

1-2 is twist to the left and in and out.

if the fork is broken, the trans has to be totally stripped down to replace it.

ya im sure the 1-2 fork is kaput.

also how does the pivot come out for the release bearing fork? i suppose unscrew the plug on the bell housing and punch the pins out on the pivot?

Take the plug out and thread in a M6 bolt I think it was into the pin and pull it out. Then you will be able to lift the fork up off the release bearing.
