2010 Legacy/Outback recalled for MISSING trans fill port

Initially, I was shocked. But considering the trash Subaru's been producing lately, I shouldn't have been.

809 stickshift 2010 Legacies and Outbacks have been recalled because the transmissions had NO FILL PORT. There was no way to add gear oil to the transmission.

So if it got low, well... your transmission would be damaged.

Here's the article.

Un-fucking-believable.

I won't go into another rant. But this only makes my decision to never own a new Subaru even more certain.

First the coolant temp gauge turns into a MPG meter and now this? Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Yup. The only practical cars that interest me anymore are American. Especially as the one I will build will be such, even if the engine isn't (if only the DI Ecotech didn't sound like a cement mixer and cost as much as a F20C).

This is what happens when you try to appeal to everybody. Toyotas with boxer engines. The Subaru that built our cars would have never done that. That's below VW level of stupid.

I saw them at the party talking about their left arm going numb when they rushed the 2.5 to market. They were raced to the ER in critical condition when they killed the 2.2 without fixing the 2.5. I watched in horror as the defibrillators tried in vain to revive them when they stopped making the GT wagon with a manual transmission. They officially died when they killed off the Legacy wagon. This is just maggots rummaging through the remains (which look much like the mice in Kimo's HVAC).

Im confused, um if you can still check the level that means theres a dipstick :S So fill it via the dipstick maybe?

Perhaps there is no dipstick. Could be like the rear diff where there's two plugs. One for drain and one for filling and checking the level. That's how it is on my metro. Open the top hole and pour in fluid until it begins to come out the hole. Then you know it's full and you plug it back up lol. I'm thinking that's pretty stupid though on a subaru. Not as easy to to this on a subaru as it is on a metro.

The article alludes to a warning light for the MT that would come on if the level gets too low. I don't know of any warning light like this....

So if you can't fill the transmission by a fill port, how the heck did SOA put anything in the gearbox?

WOH WOH WOH. Did they ever get that wrong lol. The recall is actually for a missing oiling hole in the transfer case housing of the transmission, doesnt oil 3rd through 6th gears enough. I've done one, kinda sucks and it's totally inexcusable IMO. If the vehicle has less than 6250 miles you just drill a hole using a kit supplied by SOA, if it has more you get new gears. Would be nice if reporters actually did what their supposed to before blurting out sensaitional crap like this, but like I said Subaru really screwed up on this one too. Not like there have been 3 other recalls on the new legacy/outbacks....oh wait!

BTW the new manuals are "sealed" meaning you fill them where you always did but now the fill hole is capped off by a "vent", same hole just no dipstick. Theres an overflow hole on the drivers side of the trans, take the cap of that and fill through the "vent" hole untill fluid comes out the overflow. I think they did this to help Jiffy Lubers get not so confused from all the yellow dip sticks. Just another stupid fix for a problem nobody really had.

EDIT: We also arn't inspecting the transmission gears as the article implies, that would requier much more teardown and labor, hence the whole 6250 mile cut off. If all you have to do is drill the hole then the whole procedure is done in car.
