BTW, Michael, you only got ONE picture?!? Come on.....you should have worked it like a photo shoot and told them you were a photographer working with some car magazines. :)

I'm gonna have to call Black Ops Performance and see what they have to say. It's gotta be some loophole in Florida that is allowing them to bring in all these cars.

It's always been possible with some work to get a car registered but it doesn't make it federally legal. All the guys getting their state-legal skylines taken away are getting them taken away by the feds, not by local government.

Curious though, does the title show a JDM VIN on it? I thought I remember reading that Japanese cars have shorter VINs or something which makes it very obvious when registering it.

I would kill for a 2000 STI wagon in the states.

My title, my registration, and all my insurance paperwork use the original short VIN.

There are still lots of pre-1980 cars (before standardized VINs) on the road, so gov't computer systems don't freak out like everyone thinks they do when VINs aren't 17 digits.

I got some parts from the UK yesterday. On occasion, my wipers will freeze in place, so I think the wiper stalk is probably going bad. I also got OEM downpipe gaskets from the same vendor, so I'll be doing this damned shifter job soon.

The B4 is gonna be down for a while... this is about the worst ratio of time/effort-to-repair benefit of any work I've ever done on a car.

So you all can see why I'm bitching and complaining so much about these shifter bushings, here's a pic of where they are in relation to the exhaust:
Image

I'm doing the brakes too, and that is also turning out to be more of a hassle than I thought. I got the correct rotors all the way around, and the incorrect pads all the way around :x

I'm being lazy and C&P'ing this from my Facebook, but I finally got the shifter and brakes done.

The B4 is finally running and driving, after being up on jackstands for... well... way longer than it should have been.

What was done:

- Brakes. 02 WRX front rotors, 00 Outback(!) front pads, 05 Legacy GT rear pads & rotors.

- Shifter. Infamous bushing/joint assembly replaced, missing return spring replaced, Kartboy shifter mounts. Required removal of the downpipes and intercooler. Major PITA.

- Maintenance. Oil changed, PCV valve changed, tranny oil changed, diff oil changed, leaky tire repaired.

A couple pics of the process:

I also found out the MiniDisc player works perfectly. I bought a refurb Sony MiniDisc player/recorder off eBay and ordered a pack of MiniDiscs on Amazon (that ended up coming from Japan). It took an inordinate amount of time to get it to actually record from my Windows 8 laptop (the software for MiniDisc players hasn't been updated in 6 years), but after some formatting and driver issues, I finally got it recording and got it to play in the car's stereo.

So I'm happily driving my car again, with a nice, snug shifter and tunes coming from the most obscure form of media storage :)

That does look like a PITA. But you have twice as many turbos as most Subaru!
What happens to the pressure from the driver side turbo when the valve on the I/C inlet is closed?

turbo970, that's just a pic I took with my iPhone and half-assedly post-processed in the PS Express app. It's an HDR photo... notice how you see a double bathing suit on the one girl's butt? That's because she moved while I took the shot.

beatersubi, that's actually kinda sorta a blow-off valve... but it's used as part of the transition between running on the primary turbo to running on both turbos.

This thread on SLi explains it much better than I can.

Interesting, thanks for the link. Does it work well enough in the real world to be worth the extra complication?

Thanks for the kind words, jbclegacy.

Josh, yeah, when I realized the turbo heat shields couldn't be removed without taking off the intercooler, I said to myself, aloud, "I'm not in Kansas anymore!"

But cars like this simply require more patience. Without going off the deep end (as we often do around here), I'm tiring of people's complaining about new cars and their increased complexity. A fellow human being just like you and me managed to assemble the car and make it run... there's no reason we can't figure it out ourselves.

beatersubi, the twin-turbo setup is unfortunately only at its best when you're driving 10/10ths. If you redline every gear, you'll stay above the valley of death. But if you're cruising along and you decide you want to have a little fun, it seems as though the electronics don't really know what to make of that. I usually try to keep it between 2k and 4k rpm, because that's the operating range of just the primary turbo, and that gives enough power for most everyday situations. But there's plenty of reasons why Subaru gave up on twin turbos and went with a single twin-scroll turbo on the JDM BL Legacy B4.

I also want to especially thank mike-tracy for the Opposed Forces link a couple pages back. It has been VERY helpful and I've referred to it on numerous occasions.

Haha, glad to help. Over time I really have taken to this body style. I'm debating doing a USDM WRX swap to one. Won't be nearly as cool as yours though ;)

But I'm kinda surprised you didn't notice the car in the foreground of the picture... this being a Subaru forum, after all.
