hey there.

i was driving my car to a repair shop last evening. my clutch is all worn out so i was very often up in the 7k rpm range to get it moving

when i came to the shop, after letting the car idle a bit to cool down, i shut it off, and steam came out of my exp. tank. not from the cap on the lid, but from where the lid meets the bottom of the exp. tank. i have a tank that looks like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Subaru-Impreza-Ex ... 335ea71b5b

what do you think this can be? the repair dude is also going to install a new water pump and timing belt for me. i hope its not the head gasket. but my car didnt overheat when driving it. it mustve been pretty hot in the motor.

perhaps my tank is just old and tired, and couldnt hold pressure anymore, since it didnt come out of the cap, but where the lid and bottom meet

If i'm understanding you right, you mean the top of the tank that bolts to the bowl part of the tank? I've never unbolted the top of mine but i suspect there is probably a gasket or at least silicone that seals the two halves together. So if bubbles are coming out of it, take it apart, clean it, and reseal it.

yes, radiator cap should be first to blow off pressure. if cap is good, then tank needs resealed.

Yeah, that much heat over years will lead to that.
