Hello All, ive got a first generation EJ20G with HLA heads. Ive heard of alot of issues with the valves being very noisy on these engines. Mine has began making quite a bit of noisy especially on cold start up.

Am i better off rebuilding/refreshing the heads that are on the car? What type of aftermarket cams do you all run in these engines?

Or should i ditch the HLA heads and run solid lifters? What are my options?

For what its worth i have an EJ22T harness and ECU running the the ej20G

Thanks!

-William

your putting the 20G heads on the 22T block? if they are the 20G legacy heads i wouldnt bother. the comp ratio will be about 6.9:1

I have a 90 legacy rs type RA. Mine have just begun to get noisy too. After painstaking research I have found that this was actually a warranty issue on these motors. Back in the day Subaru would correct the problem by replacing the heads complete with v1 heads. I bought a set of v3 heads with manifold and harness and a PFC. As for a block I'm either refreshing my closed deck or swapping in a ej25 short block. The parts for the hla heads are no longer avail from Subaru or the after market at all. The valves and springs are the same as 20k heads the cams are the same as all early ej20 cams and the litters are all on their own...no solid or sodium filled avail at all, anywhere...mrt had a conversion kit avail 18 years ago...no longer produced.

Best to find a later set of heads...you'll rev higher and make more power that way too...

The actual HLAs are compatable with early Legacy SOHC HLAs.

I have a thread on here somewhere on how to recondition them. Usually you just need to remove the HLAs, clean them and bleed them.

I'd agree with PhyrraM, pull the HLA's, clean and bleed them, replace any that are bad, and then reinstall.
