Injector, ecu question

I am swapping an EJ22 from a manual tranny 1992 sedan into an 1990 auto wagon. The engine going in has the red top injectors. I have read a considerable amount on this topic and am seeking clarification.

From what I have read here and at USMB, I should use the ecm from the '92 to match up with the '92 injectors. Since the '92 is a manual tranny, I will have to make slight modification to tell the computer that it is now running an auto. Do I have that right?

I am curious, however, if the 1990 ecm is used, can it "learn" to run the '92 injectors efficiently over some time, even if it starts out running a little rich?

I should have read a little more before I changed the second injector on the engine that is coming out. Then I may not have hydrolocked the engine and bent a rod . On the plus side, the engine I am putting in sounds a lot tighter than the one I'm taking out.

Anyway, thanks for the help, now and in the past.

Andrew

Welcome Andrew.

I would recommend using the 92 ECU with the red top injectors. There is a little oddity with the 92 ECU in that the MT/AT identifier pin is wired backwards. So if you put it in your 90 Legacy as is, it should recognize that the car is an AT. Here's a little blurb from my swap write-up.

Also, just so you know, the engine harness on the 92 engine is going to be different than the engine harness on the 90 engine. The 90 has three square plugs, while the 92 only has two square plugs. The easiest option is to just swap engine harnesses from the 90 engine to the 92 engine so it matches the chassis harness on the 90.

Thanks for response, Josh. Its good to know that I should be able to do a direct swap with no other modifications.

What would I see/experience if the computer did think the tranny was manual?

I am swapping out the harnesses.

To satisfy my curiosity, do you think the '90 ecu would learn to run the red top injectors properly if used?

The idle would likely be a little high or low if it thought it were a manual. Especially when switch from park to drive or neutral.

As for whether the 90 ECU would learn to run the red tops. It won't. I ran the red tops for almost a year before swapping in the 92 ECU The engine will run richer, and get poor fuel mileage, as well as just not seem to be its "normal" self.

Thanks, Josh. Since you've already been down that road, that can save others the trial and error experience.
