Engine Replacement Options for a '96 LSI?

Hi,
I'm looking at a '96 LSI that had the original, 2.5l removed.
How far back (old) of a 2.2 NA engine could I put into it? (I do have a '90 2.2 NA available.)
How difficult of a drop-in would this be? What challenges would I face?
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike,
The biggest issue you'll likely run into is the engine management. I'm not sure if the 2.5 that was in the car had an EGR valve. If it did, putting in that 2.2 might be rather difficult due to the ECU wanting to see the EGR. There are some other minor changes with the TPS sensor. Other than that, there may be some differences in the fueling. I'm not sure if that's going to be big issue or not. You may have to use the 2.5's injectors so the ECU is happy. Also, is the 2.2 from an AT or MT?

Hi Josh,
Thanks for the candid advice (and warnings)!
It appears that if I pursue this 'opportunity.' it would be best to consider newer engine options.
The 2.2 is from an AT.
Happy Holidays!

Yeah I think that is probably a better option in the long run. Keep you're eye out for a newer engine.
