ticking noise ?????

Every once in awhile when I'm getting into my car there is a strange mechanical ticking sound coming from the trunk area. Some times it starts to make the sound as I turn the key to unlock the door, other times it won't start until I sit down. It always lasts about 25 to 30 seconds. Not long enough to pinpoint where it is coming from exactly, but I have narrowed it down to the drivers side if the trunk area. At first I thought it was a trunk spring vibrating, but it is too rhythmic and doesn't taper down in sound before it stops. It hasn't had any impact on any of the functions of the vehicle, as far as I can tell, but it has got me curious. Hell, it's got me stumped.
