Due to the design of these 1st gen's cooling system, one is not needed. If you really wanted one, I'm sure any would work, however.

No disrespect but idk if I believe that. I had a mechanic that worked on subaru's a good family friend. And he said make sure you run a turbo timer on any turbo that you put on a car.

Here's a couple of writings from people on the board:

cartwheels wrote:Yep, the popular opinion is that turbo timers aren't really necessary in these cars. The owner's manual does mention allowing the car to idle for a bit after hard driving though, so it couldn't hurt.

sammydafish wrote:Turbo timers are totaly pointless. If you have a water cooled CHRA and run a modern good quality oil, especialy a modern synthetic, you'll never coke your turbo bearings. Turbo timers were needed in the days of weak oil and non cooled turbos. The only reason companies wtill sell them is because people think they're cool and buy them. If you're not running a 72 turbo porsche, you don't need one.

man i race my car 19psi full blast, and shut it down its a rally car. stick a granade in the hood and the motor will keep going.
Talking about a different type of turbo (not found on Subarus from the factory):

Now understand this: I'm not trying to tell you how to spend your money. But... You asked about a turbo timer on a car with an oil and water cooled turbo. After you shut the car off, convection currents draw the coolant through the turbo, coolant overflow bottle and radiator, providing a coolant effect sufficient to keep the oil in the turbo from coking. To increase your margin of safety, a turbo timer can be beneficial, however, most of the high-horspower (relatively speaking) builds on here do not run one.

Ah ok. Sorry for not believing you entirely right off the bat. So all these days of cooling my turbo was worthless awesome. Hahaha anyways. I got a td04 on the way. And I prolly shouldve put that in the initial post but oh well. But ok so the td04 doesn't need one either?

All the newer stock subaru turbos are water cooled, including the TD04.

I will caveat what mike and others have posted....If you are really driving agressively, it would be a good idea to idle the motor a little bit afterwards rather than immediately shutting if off. Despite being water cooled and the convection currents providing cooling, if the temperatures in the turbo are hot enough, the water cooling may not be enough to keep the oil from coking on the bearings due to excess high temperatures.
