so due to the lack of a shop or tools i decided to take my 91 ss to the "subaru guru" where i live and he just gave me a quick diagnosis of main shaft sounds shot. clutch engaged the car starts fine and sounds fine. dis engaged in N and it sounds like a marble in a tin can...

. it still limps in all its gears "only moved it a few feet. but still makes the nasty sound. but reverse sounds fine? anyways i looked into klienkids "spelt correctly?" thread and im Very interested in the 6mt swap. but it seems everyones given up on posting on it for a final build and or cost. i found a 06 6mt for around $3,000 with 60k "good deal"? and or does anyone know of a rebuild kit for our tannys? or another route i can go with this? any help would be great. thanks

here's what im currently working on because i have the exact same issue.
A Buddy of mine led me onto finding a WRX Transmission case and putting 99+ 2.5RS guts into the WRX Case. You'll have to get a 4.11 diff.. This is so i can still utilize the Pull Style Clutch setup i have for a wrx.
He has done this in his Touring wagon, and i plan on going the same route.
I have 2 turbo 5 speeds in my shed both with bad imput shafts.. There are a few shafts on the east coast, but they are EXTREMELY expensive

Sounds like a good alternative to me. How well do you think that set up will hold up?

he says he's pretty hard on his setup, and it's still holding up.

My 97 Impreza is pretty noisy and it's probably the main shaft as well. Just not sure if it's the bearings or gears. I'm leaning towards bearings. It's been that way for a couple years. I'm just going to keep driving it until it dies

The trans currently in my car (quick swap in of a new main shaft) makes the exact same noises in neutral. However, i know those bearings are all good, but another trans I pulled apart making those noises has a bad bearing on the 1-2 gear on the layshaft. That's the problem in my current transmission as well - but you can put a gazillion miles on it before it will grenade on you (25 k and going, but the noise is getting worse). First gear always spins, no matter what gear you are in or if the car is in N with the clutch engaged... You can demonstrate this to yourself if you've ever had a 5MT open.

new up date. got the transmission fixed at a transmission shop in spokane,wa on glass and market. Mayfield transmissions. a guy named shane did it in a week. my real problem was second gear. ill post pics if i can figure it out. "2nd was BAD!!! lol" anyways. new mainshaft, 2nd gear &sync, and full inspection cost me $500.00 through him. number to the shop is 1509-484-9433 if yall are interested. thanks for all the advice and help
