300-400hp EJ22T

So, I've read so much about the 300-400hp EJ22t builds...My question is does anyone have a recipe for this? I realize the SOHC heads need to be heavily ported w/larger valves. I am not talking about throwing some DOHC heads on it. What can you do about cams? Do they make hot ones? Injectors? Ignition? Stock ECU w/Perfect Power 6 or standalone? What turbo? What boost? Just looking for some tips from someone that's done it. I know it's possible.
Thanks

I don't recall anybody who has dynoed 300HP on the SOHC heads. Could be forgetful though.

Legacy777 is pretty close to 300whp on the stock heads

Wasn't 93forestpearls car around 320 with stock heads, delta regrinds, and "custom" porting ( I watched as he took a die grinder and gasket matched them haha)

any perticular reason you want to keep the stock heads?

I have a spare EJ22T and would like to use all of the parts. I have some spare EJ20G heads but it seems a little complicated to do the head swap, plus getting custom pistons made to up the compression after the drop you get from the swap.

you will need forged pistons to make 400hp, so why not get rid of the lousy stock heads at the same time.

Even w/the proper tune (most important part of any high HP build) you'll need different pistons for 300+WheelHP, from what I've read on here and elsewhere.

I'd read THIS on NASIOC for some input.

Unless you want to just 'experiment' w/your spare EJ22T?

And don't forget you'll be looking for a stouter trans soon too.

I wouldn't mind trying the stock heads. Wiseco actually list an excellent set of forged pistons made just for the EJ22T. Maybe send the heads out to Mondello? That guy gets some crazy flow numbers. I had him do a set of Oldsmobile 5A smog heads one time...He put the largest valves possible, did a full race port job and actually acid-dipped them for a grand total of a grand! Just something to play with. I don't like regrinds on cams though. I have a friend w/some regrinds from Delta and they never worked right.

you can spend a bunch of money trying to get the stock heads to flow as good as the dohc heads, or you can just install the dohc heads. the compression ratio isnt as big a deal as people make it out to be. im running a bone stock 22t block with dohc 25D heads and making 300whp at 17psi. Car has decent off boost response, and walks stg 2 sti's from a dig or a roll.

What does the compression ratio matter if you get custom pistons anyway?

I was actually talking about the off the shelf pistons that Wiseco makes for the EJ22T. They are not custom, but are the same as stock only forged.

MikeyMeyagi--I would like to get your engine/turbo/management recipe...pics?

Sorry. People were talking about custom forged pistons, so I made a bad assumption.

That's alright. I was just wondering what anyone has been able to get out of the EJ22T in it's most basic form (Without head swaps).

VF23, FMIC, EJ20K cams, Robtune ecu. stock block and stock 25D heads. Check my build thread for pics

stock 25d springs and buckets with the 20k cams?

EJ25D buckets are the same as non-STI EJ20K parts. Springs are dimensionally the same and only very slightly different in springrate, if any.

Not trying to be a smart ass or anything but getting 300-400hp out if this motor, stock heads or not, is going to be more complicated than swaping the heads. I can understand the whole low compression thing though.

I have a EJ20 from a 02 WRX block sitting in my garage that I was going to use the heads and maybe intake from for my build. But I'm now considering just building my spare engine up with the stock heads, my reason being....

I like the idea of having a solid engine, something I can just beat the crap out of. The non-interference part of the stock heads is very appealing to me.

I too would like to get roughly 300whp out of my block eventually.

they are still non interference with turbo legacy head gaskets and ej25d heads, ask my how i know lol

never tried (was think but siad for what !!) stock heads, such a small intake manifold.

i can say with stock ej20g and 250,000kms ej22t (from scrap yard) new rings and bearing's all stock made about 330 350 whp.

it was a good stock motor, every week i raced it q mile and race track. if i dropped it back in! that sucker would fire up and run perfect.

But my big problem is I don't have sweet non-interference heads... unless someone wanted to trade me? Eh?

You're really going to need a standalone to get 300 whp or above. I just don't see anything else working well. I've kept the stock heads because I've got all the work setup on it already. If I had it to do over again, I'd go DOHC heads. When and if this motor ever goes or if I want more power, I'll just be upgrading to the EJ257 motor. Since I can run it with my Link, it's a no brainer.

With the upgraded wiseco pistons and delta cams, I should be closer to 300 whp. I was at 242 whp & 280 ft-lbs torque to the wheels on stock internals.

Where does one get those heads though? I'd be willing to sell mine and buy those if they'll just bolt up.
