I'm planning on buying a 97 outback AWD 5 speed this weekend. I'm told it will fit my 1990 cable clutch Legacy. Just checking this is the case before I buy.

It'll bolt up. That thing should be a hydraulic tranny, so to keep your cable clutch, you move the clutch fork's pivot pin (in the tranny bellhousing) to the other bolt hole right in the area. You keep your current flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, clutch fork, etc.

cool thanks. The seller says he had it in a 92 legacy so we should be fine.

No offense to Mike, and I'm not the expert, but the '97 is a Push-style, hydraulic and the '90 may be a Pull-style cable, so I thought the clutch/PP/FW would need to match the '97.

I thought the pedal box was also different....I sold a turbo hydraulic pedal box a few years back to someone swapping from a cable setup.

Push- or pull-style refers to what the throwout bearing does to the pressure plate, not how the force is applied to the fork.

So, as long as they're both N/A transmissions, they should both be push-style.

I'm the guy who ran it. It worked great for 6 years, but I had started doing allot of field work with significant highway driving - I got tired of the low fifth gear so I swapped the trans out.

It was a direct swap, nearly identical to the first gen. In practice, 5th was really not that much lower than the others, but I had rebuilt a first-gen with higher 5th anyway.

I got the tranny in other Easter break. The cutch was on the way out so I fitted a 98-01 Impreza RS ACT 6 pad race clutch which works great apart from in heavy traffic. The tranny is from a 97 outback and has a super set of ratio's the 5th is lower but all the other gears seem closer which really suits my 2.5/2.2 set up. Stripping down the old tranny revealed a broken sector fork so I was amazed I got the gears. One thing I always fit is the throw out bearing sheaf. This is a stainless steel construction fitting over the aluminium original surface. The clutch feeling with the cable clutch is super smooth and saves un-even pressure plate wear. I also fixed the oil leak as mentioned in another thread. Next to fix is the whinning rear wheel bearings.
