Hey guys just got this car, its a 97 legacy LHD swap. I think the primary is taking a dump, if so, would a TD04 be a suitable swap for the primary turbo? if not, what would be a good turbo swap for the primary?
Thanks guys

Welcome to the BBS.
Yeah I think the TD04 would probably alright for the primary turbo.
I'm curious to see how it was converted to LHD. Any pictures?

sure i can try and whip some up. all that was done really was, we moved the brake booster to the driverside strut tower and welded up a very solid shaft to extend from the firewall to the booster. its running a Simple Digital System for the fuel and ignition.. cars great i love it! but this whole turbo thing is kinda upsetting.
Ill take some engine bay pics and try and get them up here.

Interesting setup.
So was the car originally LHD?

Yes.
there is a manual boost controller from the IC to the valve on the secondary turbo to open the hotside, i tried adjusting it today to make it open closer to the primary and it made the primary open with the secondary.. i had no boost until almost 5k and then it went straight to full... any ideas? Also we found a vacuum line on the bottom of the solenoid that opens the secondary that was disconnected, and another vacuum line coming from underneath the IC that has been blocked off.

Hmmm.
I have never seen the vacuum diagram for the twin turbo setup, but that's where I'd suggest starting. Try getting your hands a hold of that to see how it's supposed to be, and then compare that against your setup.

yeah thats deff the best start!

Have you tried asking for a diagram on some of the other forums, possibly NASIOC or the rslibertyclub

Not yet i havent, ive been trying to find what i can myself before i go asking a bunch of questions. I did find that i am missing a huge part in the system.. the Black Box of Doom as people like to call it. all the vacuum lines in the system run from what they control to the box.. there are 6 soleniods as well in the box that open and close both the secondary hotside and waste gate control.
I do have the solenoids i believe, and they are all wired in as far as electrical goes, but i have no idea if they are actually set up correctly. And i still need to trace the vacuum lines and figure out where that vacuum line goes from the bottom of the vacuum solenoid on the secondary hotside.
I tried hooking up the bottom vac line on the secondary hotside solenoid to a vacuum port which feeds into the intercooler and that made the secondary never open haha..

Yeah I think you may need that black box of doom. There's probably some funky logical switches with solenoids that are taking place in there.
Diagrams from the factory manual is probably the only way you'll get it sorted out.

Yeah the black box has 3-4 pressure exchange solenoids and i think 1-2 wastegate solenoids, and 4819056089 vac lines inside of it lol....
I would definately like to see more pics of the setup tho, without the intercooler installed. Also the primary turbo has 2 outlets on it, one in the normal position and a second point straight up and i believe the outlet is 1"-1-1/4"
Look on ebay for VF21 VF31 and look at the turbo with the HIGE wastegate and you'll see what im talking about

Yes i no exactly what your talking about, thats the vacuum solenoid to open a flaper which allows exhaust gas to pass the turbine on the secondary turbo. It is suppost to stay shut until a certain rpm/vacuum/primary tubro boost.
I talked with the previous owner the other day, they did their best to eliminate the black box and all the solenoids mainly because they went standalone... so the ecu no longer controlled the solenoids in the black box...
I did some more playing around with vacuum lines, i think ive got it now so that the secondary will open with the primary.. there is another air gate at the point where the charged air from the secondary turbo enters the IC.. i need to either eliminate that or some how make it open at all times..
Basically im working on making this thing a parallel system now.

i think what you should try to do is eliminate the BIG wastegate, and re-do your exhause so that you have just the primary and secondary turbo, and fill in the gap from the Big wastegate, then you can run 2 MBCs and have your twin turbo and have either turbo controlled individually
Or is that what you're thinking about?

thats basically what im thinking about, only that big wastegate your talking about i think i would like to leave, cause if i can keep it shut momentarily it will get more air flow to the primary turbo.. still kinda sticking to the way subaru had it set. As the primary is coming out of vacuum the secondary will kick in and begin spooling. Lucky me, i have a dyno i can use so i am going to have someone drive the car while i watch the big waste gate open that way hopefully i can get it timed just right.
