Welded tranny crossmember?

So I was thinking, why should I bother to buy poly bushings for my tranny crossmember when I could just weld the 3 pieces together as one solid piece. I'd still be using the group N tranny mount to connect the tranny to the, crossmember, and I could still drop the whole unit to be able to drop the tranny. Am I missing something here?

Don't do that just get the $30 pink bushings and call it a day.

Why? What's the difference? From a technical stand point, it seems like it'd be better, maybe even stiffen the chassis slightly.

From my standpoint poly bushings still absorb some noise also if you weld it I doubt the bolts will line up PERFECTLY. Whenever I bolt up the crossmember i need to flex each end slightly to get it to light up with the chassis bolts.

I agree, lining those holes up is always a PITA.

I think if you wanted to weld something, you could consider boxing in the transmission mount itself. There's a lot of play to be lost there.

Without a jig, you can be assured to not weld it up straight. Besides, the poly ones probably aren't even necessary. Mine probably weren't. I would worry more about the mounts themselves, among other things.

Like I said, I already have groupN mounts for the motor/ tranny, it was just a random idea I had. I'd weld It in the car...but l guess I will just leave it alone.

Interesting idea. I'm going to look into this. Boxing the trapezoid shaped mount that actually bolts to the trans seems like a interesting idea too. I'm going to play around under there this weekend...
