auto tranny problems

First off I want to say hello to everyone here, just found out about this site today. Now my question... my auto trans. isn't doing so well, the fluid drains from the torque converter if it sits for any amount of time, the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are soft as butter, it takes a little while to engage(i.e it slips downhill at stoplights and I have to use the brake as a clutch to prevent hitting the person behind me), and to top it all off it shudders uphill in 3rd and 4th gears... :( Its got over 160k on it also...
Anyone got any suggestions...

In short......the tranny is in need for a rebuild.

Mine has similar issues.

There is a shift kit for the 4EAT's, which does help the shifting a little, also, there is a brake band that can be adjusted to help shifts a little.

All of that is money......the two things I mentioned shouldn't be too overly expensive.....however the results may not be night and day.

I had the shift kit put in, and adjusted the band.....it helped shifts a little, but didn't make the tranny any better.

Only surefire solution is to have it gone through....including torque converter and all that stuff.

Other option, try to find a lower mileage used one to swap in.

Thanks for your reply, where can I find this shift kit?

Since your tranny is basically "Dead" as it is, try to tighten the 2-4 band to see if your problem can be helped. Tighten the threaded headless bolt 1.5 turns. Have a freind help watch it because when you loosen the nut it will want to turn.

You will know you tightened it too much when the car is stuck in second gear.

I think I'll just leave it alone in that case since I have to drive 40 miles a day, the last thing I need is for it to completely break. Thanks for the suggestion though.

? You could always undue it. Realize this is a normal adjustment that was probably meant to be performed long ago.

I recently bought a sedan with 147k miles and this was one of the first things I did to fix it. You are right that it can be broken by improper adjustment. However this doesnt come from overtightening but from over loosening.
