WTB auto 3.90 transmission

Ok so I was doing a motor swap in my 93 SS and apparently I jammed up the pump on the trans and effectively bricked my trans....the quote to repair the transmission from the shop was $1300..which is out so I need a replacement they can toss in for me seeing how I already owe them for a removal/install.

I am looking for any transmission that is confirmed will work, any 3.90 AT trans that has the same electric pigtails as the one from a 91-94 SS, I have heard the same year NA legacy and impreza transmissions will work, but I have not had anyone say they will for sure.

I just don't want to waste any money buying a trans that will not work due to a stupid plug. My only other option is a 5spd trans but that would require work I really would rather not do right now.

hopefully someone can help me as I am running out of time, and this transmission shop is going to start charging me storage fees if I don't do something soon.

Plz add your LOCATION to your Sig.

FWIW, the '92-94 Legacy NA and '91-94 turbo were both 3.90....can't say about Imprezas.

Just to help, any non-turbo 1st gen leggy trans will work, wiring for a non-turbo trans is identical, HOWEVER, the torque converter and flexplate for the non-turbo trans IS NOT THE SAME! So if you get a non-turbo trans make sure you get the torque converter and flexplate with it. I am not sure if the turbo's torque converter will fit the non-turbo trans. I'm not sure if there is any issue with the SS TCM on a non-turbo trans though.

NO....'89-91 are 4.11 final drive ratio; '92-94 and all turbos are 3.90. If you get a '89-91 you also need to swap out the rear diff...been there done that. Search on here for confirmation.

YES..The TC and flexplate are different on the turbos, as well as the TCU/TCM tuning. Match the TCU to the trans. You can mix/match TC/flexplate w/the trans, e.g. Turbo TC/Flexplate w/NA trans.

Did you look @ CarParts.com?

5-speed Turbos had a 3.90 FD ratio, too.

yeah there are a ton of transmissions that will work if I do a 5mt swap, but due to the electronic clips I need a phase 1 3.90 trans....connectors are key here. Any 3.90 1st gen legacy trans will work, but the turbo has extra clutches in the pack than the NA to handle the extra torque...so an NA trans would be a temp fix at best..

I have a 5mt trans on my 04 RS that is 3.90 with a stage 1 clutch and light flywheel, but I'd rather not make one car less complete to drive another.....

I am really in a bind here....why don't transmissions grow on trees??

damn bad timing, bro. im pulling out my 130k 3.90 tranny, d line, and diff for a 5 spd. cant pull it till i have my clutch and various swap parts... if you still need one later this month, itll be around, and its perfect. coming from my 2 owner 130k turbo TW........

if for some reason you happen to have all the random inexpensive parts to do my swap, plus a clutch for a cable 4.11 tranny, id trade...

then i realized you are across the country

yeah shipping is what kills it, sounds like the perfect deal too :sadpanda: If you get a chance see if you can get a shipping quote to 02893 and also LMK what you want for it.....might still be worth it seeing how they want $1400 for a pump repair
