So I got my 92 ej22t apart, this engine has 470,000kms(290k ish miles) on it was auto up till about a year ago and then was swapped to a pull type 5mt.

Heres a picture of the #3 crank journal where the thrust bearing is, you can see the groove on the one side compared to the other. The groove it still very smooth and even. Am I going to be able to get away with new bearings and have more end play for a while, or am I basicly stuck with machine work or new crank?











Keep in mind, the motor ran fine and had no noises or issues associated with the crank walk.

Unfortunately, you'll probably have to get new bearings or at least the dimensions of new bearings to compare your thrust measurement to the new bearings.

Actually, I've got a set of virtually brand new stock bearings (~10,000 miles on them). I can take some measurements of the thrust bearing with a caliper, and then you can do the same with your old bearings. Once you have those dimensions you'll need to take a thrust measurement on the crank. With all that you can calculate what your theoretical thrust measurement would be with new bearings. You can then compare that the specs and decide whether you need to look at machine work or a new crank.

That is your other option, get a new crank. The cranks are the same between the turbo & non-turbo ej22 motors, so you should be able to find a used one from a non-turbo motor for a reasonable price.

Thanks josh, I love how thorough you are, I had someone look at the crank and they said its done, the journals are scored which Cant really be seen in the pics. I have already found a replacement that I can get next week.

Got a new crank, after talking to the subie specialist I it from, he suspects the thrust wear if from the oil squirter that had fallen out who knows how long ago, which is good to know.

Yeah, when you put the squirters back in, it's a good idea to put a small dab of medium locktite on the threads
