New brakes, loud squealing noise when backing up

Post by Liberty10 »

Just last week I had a seized caliper issue taken care of on my rear brake. The brakes are new - only a month old.

Yesterday and today, when backing out of the driveway, there was a rather loud squealing sound from the rear brake area (no cats were injured - I checked). The sound does not reappear during regular driving, stops, starts etc. Both times it has only occurred with that first movement out of the driveway (a slight incline, but not much).

Is this just coincidental timing with the caliper repair? Maybe moisture overnight? Nothing but rain and dark skies here lately.

Thank you.

It's probably just squealing from the brake pads being a little loose. That's really all brake squeal typically is. Did the shop put all the brake shims back in when they replaced the brakes? Also did they put any disc brake quieter on the back of the pads? I like this stuff by crc

Hi Josh,

I don't know if it was done that way but I'm sure we'll double-check on it now (well, tomorrow). Being only half-awake when I read your comments, I thought you'd written "I like this stuff by ccr" and I was anticipating a link to YouTube.. lol.

The red stuff is cool (wish I had some) but CCR would've been cooler :)

CCR may have been cooler, but they won't do much for your squealing brakes :)

It's still weird to me how the brakes make that noise only when I back up.. Why wouldn't it do the same thing when I brake at a stop sign? If it's debris or something, how does it know what direction I'm going? lol

Yes, these are the strange things I ponder, Josh.

The pads will wear in a certain way since you're a traveling forward 99% of the time, so when you drive in reverse the pads can vibrate and make noise.

I thought that maybe it was just that I had very smart brakes. Easiest "fix" is to park on the level road.. :P
