Hello all,

I'm new to this group, and come humbly asking for advice.I bought a
91 Legacy sport sedan turbo awd/auto tranny 5 months ago. It
had 138k miles, body in good shape, everything working. previous
owner had kept meticulous records, looked like a bargain at 2k. As
the happy owner of a 97 Legacy Outback, I jumped on this Subie, and
was going to let my son drive it when he returned from the service. I
drove it for a month and really grew to like it.

To make a long story short, It now sits at a garage, with a fried
engine. My son drove it after it overheated and it failed the block
test(?), and the mechanic recommends another engine or the junkyard.
Needless to say , I am slightly PO'ed.

My question to the group is: Is this car worth putting another 2k
into for a new motor? The engine offered has 91000 miles and a one
year warranty fully installed ( I am not mechanically inclined, and
I would not think of doing something like this myself!) Or could I
get anything reasonable moneywise selling the car for parts. I really
hate the thought of junking it, but also dont want this car to become
a money pit!! Thanks in advance,

My advice, the turbo legacies are definitely more difficult to come by, especially ones that are in good shape. I would love to have one. If it's 2 grand to put that motor in and for the labor I'd say do it. But then again I'm not you, so it's ultimately something you have to decide.

The cars are great, i love my 93 turbo wagon, but i do want to give
you one word of caution:

The transmission will go out soon if it's never been rebuilt.

The 4EAT in the turbos was strengthened, but early Subaru ATs are not
known for great longevity.

Now with that out of the way, these cars are incredible with healthy
engines and fresh suspensions.

I've hung on to mine for a year now waiting to rebuild my engine, and
I most likely will dump 2k into it, even though I am doing it myself.
I have the exact same car. So you have company if you decide to do
it. Of course I have this sickness where I think working on cars is
fun...

Tom,

Is the engine offered a turbo? There are internal differences, (compression ratio and lubrication movement), between the turbo and the naturaly aspirated engine. I don't think anyone would recommend bolting the turbo from your old engine onto your new one if it didn't originally have a turbo.


I used to think $2000 was a lot of money to put in a car but I just bought a new Oldsmobile to drive for work and now it looks like less than a half year payments on the new one.

1st off, where and what mechanic did you take it to? You just might be in
the area of another one of us and we could recommend someone else to you.

To me: Yes. But i wouldn't pay 2k for a engine with 91 thousand miles on it.
I think paul eklund has an engine for sale for somewhat less then that. Try
him first (pauleklund@aol.com).

Like i said, if you're in the area of some more of us, we could have an
install party! woo hoo!

Off the top of my head, i can think of a couple parts that i would buy off
you, but i'd explore the option of keeping it and doing the work myself
before i even thought of parting it out.

A couple months ago i blew my head gaskets. Since i didn't have the money to
pay someone to do it, i had to learn how to do it AS I DID IT. Thank god for
the service manuals that i borrowed from another member (Thanks again sam!);
the subaru sevice manuals make it a lot easier then other manuals do. of
course it took me a while to do it (three weeks); but the job got done, and
they're still holding up.
