Ive been having this problem as well, no idea whats causing it. 95% of the time im only getting 5psi boost but once in awhile i get 9 and its quite a noticeable difference. Got this car not too long ago and the last owner said the spark plugs and wires were changed pretty recently. what else could be causing this issue? could it be the temp sensor i hear so much about?
ive been using 94 octane gas so that shouldnt be the issue. im considering trying lower octane just to see if thats the problem.

Where do you live to get 94 oct? I want some...

As far as your problem goes, did you read all of the suggestions Alphius brought up in this discussion? Also keep in mind when you're buying a car alot of people will just say they did a tuneup just to get the car sold.

i live in vancouver BC. come by for some haha

i trust the guy though, he works at subaru service and bought the car from a trade in for $400. trade in was from first owner and serviced there for 20 years so records are all there. he then put in new plugs/alternator/tires/HIDs and i can see they are. sold it to few me months later at cost cause im his buddies friend.

that aside though, how do you guys get the readings from the ecu? i need to buy a cable of some sort i assume?
i guess ill take some things apart and try to find the culprit.

Welcome to the BBS.

You can pull the codes yourself via the instructions on my site.

thanks for the link, ill check that out when i get home
did some pulls today while heading to work. 5 minutes in i was getting 9psi for awhilethen back to 5. then about 10 mins after that it went back to 9 for one pull. then went back to 5 again.
really confused to why it would be intermittent like that.
and just to clarify, im not getting any cel or anything.

Have you pulled all the vacuum/boost lines going into the boost control solenoid and MAP sensor to make sure they are clean and free from any debris/oil?

If there's oil dripping from them, they need to be cleaned. Also, you can blow through them and make sure there's no obstructions.

Vacuum lines seem good. Wierdly enough today after work i got 80% 9psi boost today. Whereas just this morning and yesterday i was at 5psi the whole time.
One thing i did notice was that when i do hit full boost i seem to have really hot heat blowing. Dont know if its because my engines hotter i get full boost. Or because of full boost my engines getting hotter. Or completely unrelated. My temp needle stays around the middle though and heat never blows cold.

subaru_styles wrote:well folks...... plugs and wires seem to have been the problem from the begining

after i replaced them and did a reset the car has not gone back into "safe" mode. no knock counts and the OF is actually starting to rise. its at 69 right now and I imagine the more i drive it , the better the ecu will tune

an update to this thread..needless to say that didnt fully fix my "driveability" problems.
so over the past months:
put in a brand new coil pack..nope
brand new fuel pump...nope
brand new knock sensor..nope

so now i got really frustrated, cuz after the knock sensor & reset today it ran even worse! so last ditch effort i pulled apart the maf (wasnt getting a CEL for it) cleaned the hell out of it. started it up INSTANTLY fixed my problem!! no hesistation, waay more power, pulls perfect to redline. its been soooo long, I forgot this car used to have some balls

How do you go about cleaning your MAF.. I have the same problem kinda.. I start out. First drive of the day. The cars warm ready to go. i get the boost gauge to hit 10psi and it instantly drops to 7or8 then my bcs starts clicking and my turbo makes a little sqreech at llike 2k rpm and its kinda bogged down when i put my foot into ...it hardly leaves 3k rpm until i make the power light come on.. I get hesitation and surging like a vac leak but ive checked all my lines and replaced all stock clips with hose clamps they all check out got rid of the bosch plats. Put ngk v powers gapped @ .41.... no diff.. Had the trans flushed and new filter amd gasket. Front diff drain and fill... Same performace. I have codes 22.23.31.41.49. thats what the black connectors read when i do the d check mode it blinks steadily meanimg theres no active codes?!?!.... .. i also have a post about this with the title "floored and shitty response and bcs clicking..or something like that.

un plug the connector, remove the screws holding the maf and pull it out. spray it down like 8 or 10 times with maf cleaner, let it dry and re install. i have a ssm cable and a copy of revscan on my laptop if you want to plug it in and check out your ecu readings or easly reset the ecu

Ah ha success full boost.. Consistantly. My maf had a thick layer of black shit i had to carfully scrape off cuz the crc cleaner wouldnt get it all off. It did clean the element part just not the pillars that the little wire elements are strung accrossed. Now i just need to get smooth acceleration. With no hesitation..... I put a diamond coil pack in and new ngk v-powers gapped at .41.. Could the gapping be the problem with the accel?. ......

( id recommend this no matter what. I am going to do this with all of my cars. And do it every air filter change.)

The plug gap is where it should be....so I'm not sure how that's the problem.
