power steering line leaking

The hard line going into my steering rack is just disintigrating. I thought I saw somewhere that instead of replacing the whole line, because it is such a bitch to get to, they just cut off the yucky part, and used some hose and clamped the ends. Does this sound like a good idea?
The line going into the steering rack is viritually impossible to reach with a wrench without removing a ton of stuff, and it would only seem easier to do it this half assed, hackjob way.

Is it the high pressure line or low pressure retun line?

if it's the high pressure line, I wouldn't even attempt to use hose and clamps. If it's the low pressure side, it might be doable, but would likely be a hack job.

It's not the pressure line, but the return line. I actually have a brand new replacement line, but I have no clue how I can access one side of the line which goes into the steering rack itself, without actually have to drop the whole assembly. I bought the line to actually prevent doing so. I'm beginning to think it isn't possible without dropping the rack.

You may be able to loosen the rack and get it down just a little bit to get access to the fitting.
