Coolant tank madness.

On my way home yesterday I stopped at a light and noticed a whiff of steam escaping the hoodscoop. The temp gauge red normal so I let it go till I got home. Got home and lifted the hood. coolant everywhere. after some trial and error I discovered the coolant tank itself was leaking. I pulled it this morning and discovered the previous owner had done a repair job on one of the nipples and the repair job had failed.
looking around the regular spots i find nothing. This morning after looking around I find ONE local shop that has an appropriate vehicle. Online they quoted $40 I called and asked for a coolant overflow tank and was quoted $74. sounded a bit much but was kind against the wall. I go to the shop and they try to give me the little shitty plastic tank that bolts to the radiator. After a quick exchange about what the item was called I started to discribe what I needed and the guy turns his back on me and walks away. Another shop that no longer gets my business. After pondering that they wanted $74 for a plastic jug little more advanced than a soda bottle I figured id be best off finding one from the community. Some research online finds me a WRX tank for $104 (new) Kinda hoping to avoid going that route.
I have JB welded the OEM tank back together but you know how that goes. It will last as long as it lasts.

I'd buy the new WRX one if you plan on keeping the car for a while. If you are gonna sell/trade it find a used one.

Both my WRX metal tanks are leaking already, not massively but they are leaking. They re-designed them in the later WRX years with a non-metal one that seems better. I'll look through my stockpile I might have another turbo legacy one, but I'm guessing no.

do you happen to know what years are which tanks? something ive looked for and not found a lot of info on. from what ive worked out they changed tanks in 2005 so ive been looking for 2000-2004 tanks.
Any info you got would be appritiated!

If you ask a Subaru dealership the new part number will supercede the old one. I'm guessing the 06-07's are the new ones for sure. My friend had his 02 tank go and the dealership sold him the newer one even off his VIN. My metal ones are leaking from the cap/neck area. Just giving ya my 2 cents, with any of the WRX tanks you are going to have to do some slight fabrication for mounting/hoses. If that's not something you want to do try to fix your tank or find a Tleg one used but they all break off at the nipples if you look at them wrong.

out of curiosity is it leaking from the seal between the neck and the cap or is there a seam or somesuch leaking in the neck area?

Pretty sure it is the seam at either the overflow nipple right under the cap or the seam right where the cap neck meets the tank. It's a very slow leak on both cars but I can see the coolant crusties in that area on both of them. I'll take a closer look tomorrow in the day light and let you know.

picked up a used WRX coolant tank (Thank you beatersubi). took me a few minutes to convince myself not to paint it. (Im a painter, its what I do) but looking at it I figured pulling the top off would ruin whatever seal is there and dont want to mess with that. Ill be posting pics to my build" thread

got the new coolant tank in. almost no modification too. one disturbing thing, found engine oil in the interccooler. she never uses oil so not sure what to make of it. guessing its coming from the turbo, anyone have an idea?

A bit of oil in the intercooler is totally normal as a result of the PCV system doing it's job.
