Does a ceramic bearing make a big difference in spring/ball boost controllers?

I'm assuming you mean a ceramic ball rather then "bearing". In theory the ceramic balls are lighter, and therefore should react quicker than a stainless steel ball, but that will depend on the design of the boost controller and how large the ball is.
Which particular boost controller are you looking at?

Ive got one of those basic NXS mbc's you can get off ebay for around 20 bucks
It just sometimes works great and other times doesn't. I saw one made by prosport that looked nice, and had the ceramic ball. It was only 40. Any thoughts?

I don't have any experience with either of those, but I would guess the prosport will probably be a little better.
It sounds like your NXS boost controller spring may be binding or sticking, which is causing problems.
What specific symptoms are you having? Does it overboost, not build boost.....?

Thanks for the fast response. Yeah Im thinking the spring is binding on the internal threads. Thats the only thing I can think of. It doesnt really over boost. Ive got an FCD that wont let it boost over 15. When the boost controller is binding or sticking the boost is around 7 Id say. I usually end up flooring the accellerator and then things move around in the controller and it'll let me boost 14 to 15 again. Its really annoying. It builds boost fine, definitly slower though when the boost controller is binding though.

im thinking of shaving the bottom of the adjustment screw so there is a little ledge for the spring to sit on because I think its probably pitching around

That might work. If it doesn't work, there are other boost controllers out there.

instead of shaving it, what about taking a drill bit and making more of a put that is well rounded. maybe that'll be better.

thats a good call, I didnt think of that. I used a dremel to carve some of it out but a drill does seem like it would work better. I actually lost the spring that is meant for the controller, but I snipped the ends off a clothes pin spring and reshaped it at each end a bit. Seems to give consitant boost. its a real stiff spring
