coilovers different length?

For some reason my front coilovers seem to be a different length overall, ride height is even, but on one side the strut sticks out the bottom at least a half inch further. I measured the spring length when installed and its the same on both sides. My friend has an unknown brand set on his still and apparently has the same issue. Mine are JIC, any ideas?
I wouldn't be too concerned but the side that hangs lower just ripped my cv boot and I had to raise the car

That's really weird. It sounds like a manufacturing issue....

There's gotta be something I'm missing when looking at them, especially since my friend's has the same thing going on. They're used, so who knows what the PO did with them.

I'm guessing the while damper threads into the lower mounting point. What has happened is that they are set to different lengths and one is preloaded a whole bunch to even things out. What you need to do is take them off, take the tension out of the springs (and then give it a couple turns of pre-load), set the lengths even, and put them back on. Then adjust the ride height where you want by threaded the whole shock up or down in the mount and not by adjusting the spring.
That's really bad for handling btw, and is the reason coilovers should be installed, adjusted, and corner balanced by a professional.

Yea, I'm not gonna drop $500 to balance out my coilovers that cost me $200. I'm not functionally retarded so doing what you said would not be much trouble. Thank you for the advice in the first paragraph though, I'll try it out when I get a chance.
