help me identify an EJ22T...

Hey All,

I'm on a search for an EJ22T. I'm emailing with a craigslist poster who isn't sure of what he's got. I told him to simply send me a photo of the car or preferably a photo of the engine.
He seems to ignore my request (or not know what I'm asking), but he sent me this:

"On the sticker under the hood It says engine family NFJ2.2V5FFF3 Not sure if this is what you are looking for or not. Let me know."

obviously not very helpful.

What can i tell him to look for to verify that it is/isn't a turbo?
Is there something in the VIN that he can look for?

I'm considering sending photos of an EJ22 vs EJ22T, but i'm not sure that would actually help him.

I could send a photo of where the engine stamp is, but I'm fairly certain both just say "ej22".

Help me out?

Thanks!
-Chris

That's a pretty lousy picture, but those look like turbo wheels to me, and that looks like a turbo hood.

Yes, the block will have "EJ22" stamped on it in either case.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe turbo VINs start with JF1BC67 (for sedans) or JC1BJ67 (for wagons).

You could also ask him to look at the MAF sensor attached to the airbox -- 92 turbo models came with a MAF with a silver-colored aluminum body, while non-turbos came with a MAF with a body made of black plastic.

Turbo radiator grilles were body-colored, while non-turbo grilles were chrome colored. The grille might have been changed at some point though, so that's not as reliable.

the stamp in the engine bay should say ej22t are ej22e because mine did on my 93 turbo and 92 turbo ej22t and my 92 na ej22e less it was an na swaped to a 22t but yea look for a chimney maybe the stock pink injecters vs the na red ones.
just look for a turbo lol but if its pink injecter if still stock its most likly a 22t

EDIT: I'm Wrong, Wrong,...I'm Wrong.

Of the 3 EJ22T's I've owned I've never seen the EJ22T (or EJ22e) on the block.

But EJ22T IS a real description and it's on the tag on the passenger strut tower:

EJ22 stamp on the block (bottom center by the oil pressure sensor):

Identifiers of a stock EJ22T setup:
- Pink Injectors
- Hitachi silver MAF (vs. the JECS green label)
- Front breather on the block behind the P/W and Alternator
- BCS+ turbo sensors on the strut tower
- Extra vacuum ports on the intake manifold
- Rear 'cross-hatching' (?) on the block - see it on upper left of the bell housing. (I've read this means 'closed-deck' - but not confirmed.)
- 2 breather ports on each head
- extra port(s) on the water pump for the '91
- '91 has the oil cooler
- passenger side head has oil/water feeds.

- etc???

damn. even more thorough. thanks so much 'dash.

while we're on the topic and i've got your attention ^__^

it's 186k miles, asking 450$
seems like a good deal to me.
he's offering a stripped down shortblock
no AC condensor, no AC compressor, no alternator, no header.
downpipe included (?) -- although i'll replace this when i build it anyway.

i searched around the bbs and nasioc and found pricing between 300-1000$ for a longblock.

you guys think 450$ is a reasonable price, all things considered?
he's a mechanic and runs his own shop. i feel comfortable trusting his word that the motor runs.

cheers! and thanks again for all your help :-D

No offense to 'falken'....

To clarify for future. the EJ22T is not a 'real' engine designation used by Subaru. And of the 3 EJ22T's I've owned I've never seen the EJ22T (or EJ22e) on the block. It's a nickname created by Subaru enthusiasts.

My Bad.....It IS on the 'tag / badge ' on the passenger strut tower. The block is only labeled 'EJ22' as I stated and I completely forgot about the tag.
