Eratic fuel gauge

Hi
I have just got in and the fuel gauge on my '94 Legacy estate is playing up.
It registers correctly then slowly goes down low then slowly registers correctly again. This is not the normal slight movement of the fuel in the tank when going up or down hill. Any ideas?
I have looked for the fuel sender but can't fing it - wher is it and how do you get to it?
How do you remove the instrument cluster to get access to the gauge?
Thanks in anticipation
Dick

It may be Brian but mine has only just started to do it. Up till now it has been steady.

Mine does that occasionally, I always just thought it was the float in the tank sticking... never worried about it...

there is a probably aproblem with the magnetization of your fuel level indicator on your dash. The best bet is to replace that thingie. Get a second opinion, cause its a bitch to change.
Mine too :(

This happens exactly as you describe on my 95 legacy L wagon.
Have you found the problem?
I've seen MANY posts about this problem, and most say the LHS fuel level sender must be checked in the fuel tank.
Is this also your result?
thanks for replying

i saw an article that talked about cleaning the metal post on one of the fuel level senders with 1000 grit sandpaper to clean junk off of them that alters the signal. so far, i just figure out how much I get on a tank and fill up when I get within 70 miles or so of that... and my gauge is really wack. maybe one day i'll look into fixing it.

I've been doing the same thing. I discovered between 2 tanks of gas that 1/8 of the gauge meant nothing when I actually filled the tank - the amounts were almost identical. So I just use the odometer.

Mine does the same thing.
I don't think the problem is the gauge but rather the floater inside the gas tank.
Does anyone know how to access it and/or replace the part?

the gauge is completely electronic. It's not a difficult replacement of the gauge, but it will require a gauge cluster from a junkyard, and a few hours of your time. Just for your guys' benefit... the needle DOES NOT pop off.
btw, i think it's the sender.
