4eat lever lock problem

I have been lurcking for a week or so, joined, searched and now I have this problem that I am trying to solve. My 94 Legacy LS with automatic has a shifter lever that moves into and out of any position without the car turned on and without the button being depressed. Also without the brake on. I have the the console about removed but can't get the lever all the way off because of 2 small wires that I figure are for the manual button.
What controls the lever from engaging? Electrical - mechanical? And how do I get the leverl off?
Thanks for any help.

the manual button has a plug under the shifter base to allow the removal of the shifter

Welcome to the BBS.

The mechanism is in the AT shifter assembly itself. I'd suggest trying to get a used one. It sounds like the pin or some sorts that keeps you from shifting without pushing the button is broke.

Thanks for the help. I am going to get a used one because I am getting current but it looks like there is a pin missing on the right side near the level pivot point that actuates a switch.
