Will a fwd sedan auto tranny fit a fwd wagon?

I just finished pulling my 1990 wagon fwd tranny. I have found a few part outs of the sedan fwd 90-94 was just curious to know if sedans are compatible with wagons? Also I heard somewhere that 1990's are a little different and I can only use a tranny from a 1990 legacy. Is that true?

Not sure about the model year difference, but I think it was only the TCU that was different.
The subframes are virtually identical between sedan and wagon, so yes, a sedan trans will fit right into a wagon.

Yes, the sedan & wagon trans are swapable.

The FWD trans are for the most part all identical. There may be some slight upgrades in the design, but they should be compatible between the 90-94 MY's.

Having an axle to transmission question/problem

Okay so I'm having problems with the transmission swap. I pulled the tranny from a 93 or 94 Subaru legacy sedan fwd, mine is a 90 wagon. The trans ID # is TA102AA3AA (from the donor car) but the trans ID# on the VIN plate for my car is TA102AA1AA. It looks like both axle and transmission are female and there's no way for them to interlock. I know the years did vary a little bit after 1990 but was there any HUGE differences between the model years (I.E: the axles being changed?) or do I have to get a transmission from a 1990 ONLY. I ALSO I POSTED PICS TO SHOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Are you able to get axles from the new tranny?

Well, here's the thing. On all websites that I've been to (Autozone, Kragen, NAPA, etc) they all list the axles as exactly the same as the ones that I already have. Which makes absolutely no sense. If there's nothing to plug into the transmission, how on earth does this thing move? Is there some sort of gear that is supposed to be inside the transmission that is male that the axle plugs into?

or does anyone just have a picture of a 90-94 legacy with the axles out? I'm just REALLY confused, because I've done axles before but I've never encountered a problem like this.

According to that link, those stubs apparently come out easily, it's conceivable wherever you got the tranny from pulled the axles still attached to the stubs.

So following that train of thought, perhaps you could grab the stubs out of your bad tranny?

Good sir!

I believe you're on to something, and upon further investigation you were absolutely correct!

I didn't even think about that happening, but that is EXACTLY what happened.

Thank you so much for that insight! I had been stumped for a while now.

The axles pull right out of all 4EAT and 6 speed transmissions. Only the five speed has stubs that are "permanently" held in place.
