MT dies when clutch let out in neutral

Hubby just got done with the engine overhaul on our 93 MT AWD NON-turbo wagon. New clutch F1 stage 1 kit. All fluids double checked.
It ran fine in idle, he revved up to 2000rpm and heard a clunk. Let up on the clutch and the engine died. Can starts up with clutch in.
So he re-pulled the engine, replaced the clutch fork clips because they were so loose. F1 clutch disc is thicker than original, everything else the same size.
Put back in and same thing, engine will try to die when in neutral, like it is in gear instead of neutral.
Can't get it out of 1st gear unless the tires are free - meaning we had to kick the chalks away, then it goes in fine. 1st gear it wants to lurch. Reverse it wants to jerk too. No matter where the cable is adjusted.
We haven't pulled it out of the garage.
Is the transmission toast? Would the F1 stage 1 clutch be the problem? One of those purchase from Ebay then I realized maybe I should have got a normal clutch but already hit buy now.
Guess I'll renew the non-op registration for now.
And shop for a trannie? sigh we really wanted this to help with our move.
Engine sure sounded good after it warmed up.
