Are you talking about the black plastic door protector strip that runs all the way around the car with the little chrome strip embedded in it? It's been removed before but it's very rare. Doesn't look very good IMO without it. If you managed to weld a piece of sheetmetal in it's place and smoothed it over professionally you might get decent results but I think it looks pretty good as it is, minus the chrome.

There is one picture of an Orange wagon floating around that did it. Couldn't tell you more than that.

I wonder if they body-filled the bumpers or welded plastic in its place. To me, that doesn't look different enough from painted trim (if you like that look) for the effort required. At one point, I wanted to replace the trim with gen 2 trim painted to match, but partially filling the molding indents to fit the smaller gen 2 trim was also too much work IMO. I'd only have done it if I built 22B-style box flares for it (which would eliminate most of the trim anyway). I think it does need something there, though, as I suspect it would look too slab sided without some kind of line breaking up the side. Keep in mind that these were designed by Giugiaro, so he's thought of those things (of course, style is also subject to practical considerations and aesthetically challenged executive approvals, so the trim could be incorporated for those reason as well as it being the style of the time).

The more and more i think about it the more i hate the idea of shaving the trim. i think it would just look extremely ugly.

I love it on that silver car. I wouldn't want it blended smoothly with the doors though, always looks weird, and these cars are plain enough as it is so I think they need something there.

I think there's a user on here with a white wagon that painted his trim when he sprayed his whole car.

And IMO it's awful. I only say that because I know he doesn't care.
