1992 Turbo fit into 1991 motor?

Simple question... Will a turbo from a 1992 fit into my motor? Reason, I've been getting smoke (smells like oil) from around the base and underside of the turbo, also very sketchy boost, almost feels like the car is going slower under boost sometimes, but others... I'm back in the seat. Who knows? Anyway, I've got the option to buy a turbo from a 1992 model. Are they the same? If not, what's involved to do the swap, or what else fits?

yes, it is the same exact turbo. on it, it should say: IHI vf10 or RHB5 or RHB52.

Are you sure it is a bad turbo causing the smoke?

My new purchase has the same problem, and I am hoping it is v-cover gaskets...

I"m pretty sure it's the turbo now... I had the car looked at for valve cover gaskets, they fixed an oil line and told me the problem was fixed. For a few days it was, but then the smell returned, and now about three months later I"m seeing oil around the turbo and smoke... which is leading me to belive that the turbo is cooked. Also the fact that the car only stinks when after I've spooled up the turbo, and only smokes when I've been working the turbo hard.

Thanks Gary,

Mine smokes all the time... - I will try the v-cover gaskets.

Hey Andrew,

Does this sound at all like what we noticed from that 92? Have you had any ideas why we didn't get any boost?

I'm wondering if we should actually check the condition of the turbo when we head down.

there is more then one turbo that was put on the legacy turbo,s as far as I know.they are all interchangable however for instance I'm pretty sure I have a vf11 on my manual not the vf10.slap it on with no worries :)

It may not be as simple as this but on my car I know it leaks from the silly little rubber hose from the turbo's drain pipe back into the head. It really should have good clamps around it. It's really hard to get to though so I've let it be. But it does seem to send oil everywhere and often lands on the exhaust and that's where I get most of of my smoke.

good luck,
lex

ok heres my limited understanding of it,please correct me if I'm wrong.the RHB5 is the housing size.the vf11,vf10,vf12 ect.. that is the compressor size.I've heard that the autos came with the vf10 and the manuals came with the vf11.I'm not totally sure but pretty sure about this.I know that someone here knows for sure...anyone?

I had the same problem, I replaced the turbo and it turned out that the power steering pump was bad and it was leaking fluid that would drain to the back of the motor and burn on the downpipe. But power steering fluid has a very distinct smell that I should have noticed right away. My bad. Also I beleive the turbo I replaced my old turbo with was from a 91 MT, my car is a 92 AT didn't seem to make much of a difference.
