WHOOT VTEC FTW

I went to youtube to see what this vtec kicking in business was all about. Apparently there's a change in engine noise, but not much change in acceleration.

My old Toyota had VVTI which I guess is similar, but I could never notice any difference at any rpm.

actually, there is a change in acceleration. it mostly depends on what mods you have and how good your tune is. my prelude for example, would break traction in 2nd gear when vtec engaged. 3rd gear would break traction when the nitrous was sprayed.
