New question / problem

So when i bought my 92 SS the previous owner told me that it had wrx struts and springs, my questions are as follows...

1.) How can i tell if i actually have WRX struts and springs? (Cars really stiff if that helps?)

2.) I want to get top hat spacers to help with ground clearance if i do have WRX struts and springs does it matter or all top hat spacers the same?

I have done my best to search for an answer but have coem to no avail so any help would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

See if you can source spacers for a gc8 impreza (93-01)

They'll have the same bolt pattern as the tophats on your car now. I don't know much about spacing struts from the shell s I've never had nor wanted to do so. However suspension wise gc8 stuff of interchangeable. Since you're new to this stuff you may want to look at the suspension sticky thread on the suspension section of the board lots of very good and detailed information that will help you out alot.

And as far as finding out if they're Wrx struts, there are part numbers on the struts right above where they bolt up to the hub. But you'll have to get your head in there with a flashlight because it's on the inside (shell side) not the outside (wheel side)

UPDATE!!!!

So i took my wheels off and found some KYB's staring me back in the face. These where the part numbers

Right Front strut - 20311FE300
Left Front strut - 20311FE310
Right Rear strut - 20360FE840
Left Rear strut - 20360FE850

I have narrowed it down to being a GDB strut and it had green springs so i assume they are TEINS it has that famous TEIN color. Now that i know my strut how do i know what top hat i have and what springs i can run? I just want an inch i was assuming OEM springs would maybe be good. thanks Jack

You have the strut part #'s now, correct? Have you cross-referenced them with KYB's catalog to determine their application? If so, what exactly are you still wanting to know?

i was told by some legacy owners that just because i have WRX struts does not mean i am able to run WRX springs because of the top hats, is that true? or does the top hat no matter and i can run any type of spring as long as its applicable to the strut?

Yes, if the top mount for the spring you want to use is different than what is currently on the car, you will need new top hats. Where the trouble comes into play is that some of the bolt spacing and how they mount to the chassis is different on the top hats.

I am not a tap hat mix & match expert by any means, but my recommendation would be to look through the sticky compilation thread, particularly these two threads if you haven't already done so:
