Turbo munching to much petrol....maybe

Hi Guys

I had my car overboosted for about 6 months now with no problems 12 psi, all of a sudden but quite rarley once a day (20min drive)it will suddenly drop all power when on max boost (as if it has run out of petrol) only for a split second but enough to make me nearly fly through the front windscreen....this is really begining to bug me as I do a lot of very close overtaking manouvers on blind corners so I need to be able to trust my car.

Any ideas ?

Penty, it sounds like you are hitting the boost cut.At 13 psi the fuel is cut by the ECU to prvent overboosting, and resulting detonation. Turn your boost down a slight bit. Good luck,BillC

My 91 Legacy's engine is stock (no overboost) and I have the same
thing happening. When going at about 4000 rpm, I punch the
throtle .... then BANG !!! The engine momentarily cuts, like hitting
the brakes, then off I go. I can't turn the boost down because I
didn't turn it up in the first place .... puzzeling.

It could be a number of things, but i don't think your UK engine has
the 13psi cutoff, though i'm not sure.

It does sound like a fuel or spark problem, however. Recently
changed the plugs? Recently used some heavy-duty injector cleaner?

It could also be a faulty throttle position sensor.

I hate these little tiny problems...my miss just won't go away, but i
think it's a malfunctioning injector.

do you have a boost gauge fitted so as to be able to see if it is
overboosting?

the more I think about it I am sure it is not the boost cut as my gauge is a good one and is on the negative side of 12psi

yes I have won it is on the negative site of 12psi (11.5ish) so I don't think it's the boost cut

Your car won't run right without proper maintenance.

Start with those and work your way around.

(oh, and please try to reply to the messages together if possible)

I was thinking about a problem I had similar to this. It also affected my
gas milage. I found the oproblem to be fuel ignition failure, basicly my
spark plug wires were not doing there job anymore. I replaced them and the
problem went away. What I understand was happening was that under boost, the
spark was so weak that it would not ignite the fuel mixture. It did not seem
to do it except when the turbo was kicking in.
Maybe??

As everyone else has said.... you just found the ECU fuel cut caused by
overboost. It is hard to say why you just found it after 6 months of use...
probably because you were always on the edge, and perhaps due to higher
efficiency combustion due to intake charge density... are you running better
fuel or experiencing colder / denser atmoshere with the weird weather we all
seem to get... or just putting your boot in harder?
