The parts cost like $110 for the pair. Do I need any special tools to replace them? What obstacle should I expect to run into?
I was going to use Doorman's split CV boots, but found that both inner and outer boots are shot and spraying grease everywhere and those are for outer boots only so I'm SOL.

I grabbed metal clamps and the cv axle clamp tool from Napa. You can prob get away with not using a special tool as there's generic metal clamps though.

The axle nut is 32mm, so that may be the only special thing you might need if you don't have a socket that big.
Also, you should notice that on the inner joint where the roll pin holds the axles to the trans stub, one side of the joint is chamfered. That is the end the roll pin needs to go in. So use a set of punches to push it out that side.
That may not be very clear, but if you look at the axle, it may become more clear.

Pin
Note that when putting the pins back into the axle and stub, one side of the axle (and I believe the stub), has a slightly enlarged hole with a tapered lip. The pin easily goes back in the tapered hole, but if you're like me you can try the other side and ruin a couple axle pins

Don't make my mistake and put the axle on the stub "upside down". If the axle is off 180 degrees the hole will be off by 1 tooth. You can still see straight through and even fit a punch through the hole, but if you look in there its pretty easy to see if its lined up or not. Just don't try to drive the pin in like that, its less fun than driving the pin in from the wrong side of the axle
