i just scored a 2000 legacy, and it needs a transmission. i sourced a transmission and matching differential from a 1997 legacy outback. is that gonna be a bolt in operation?

So long as the transmission is the same type of clutch setup I don't see why not.

Oh. I dunno. I'm guessing it should work. I put a 94 4EAT auto into my 90 wagon along with matching rear diff. I know that's not relevant lol. Someone else can answer but it sure seems like that would work. They're both OBD2 if that makes any difference.

The late 99's and all 00 Legacys have the phase II transmissions. So electronically it won't work, nor can you swap TCU's due to different pinouts.

Mike is correct. You will need a Phase II 4EAT. That should be 2000 and newer for sure, and possibly a select few '99 cars.
