Could not find a really good place to ask this question but here SOO.
My car is a 93 SS
Can i use a power steering pump from a 99 outback 2.5L? Mines just HOWLING!
Also i plan to change my alternator to the new style ones from that 99 outback. Mines making the car run like super crap!
So ya to recap.
99 outback PS pump in a 93 ss??
PS: Found the Alt convertion here:

BUT what is meant to "delete" the turn on wire?
Thanks!
Tom

Tom,
The PS pump should physically fit. You may want to swap over the resevoir from the oil pump (after it's been thoroughly cleaned out).
Regarding the turn on wire. You just don't hook it up. Just put electrical tape around it, fold it back into the harness/loom and leave it alone.

The reservoir must be swapped or it hits the hood insulation, and hood doesn't close evenly. I'm using a 98 Outback pump currently with the original Legacy reservoir.

Well now brown cow...
I have made this alternator pickle really a pickle!
I found out this alternator that i got from this outback is a 2 pin! As in 2 wires NOT 3!
I has this alternator here:
http://www.dixie-electric.com/catalogue ... Dix=A-8576
there is no pic. BUT it has the plug im talking about!
Do i just "delete" the IG and the D wire??
Im confused!

All you need is the sense and light wires going to the two wire alternator.
There is actually only three wires on the first gen alternators (despite having four prongs/pins), sense, light, and ignition. As I mentioned above, just tape up and don't connect the ignition.

Ok
So i installed the new alternator and made a cool little harness to boot!
And that all works! Whoot!
Although.... the power steering pump does NOT work!
The hard line that threads into the pump does not work.... the factory PS line has a large barb that does not enter the hole....
I called my dealer for a new PS pump.... MY cost with all discounts its list is $650!!!!!!!!!
I shit a brick when i hurd that!
So now im going to figure out how to make 2 PS pumps into 1 working one......

Take apart the pump and see what's wrong with it. If it's just the bearing, they can be had for very cheap.
This thread will have all the info you need.

Hmm I must have written it in another thread, but I swapped to the newer power steering hard lines (which bolted up perfectly to the rack) and then discovered they didn't work with the 1st gen pump. That's why I went with the newer corresponding pump.

OK.
The only real problem with the actual pump from the 99 outback was the hard line threads
The factory legacy ss hard line has a bard at the end of the line.
SO what i did because im smart i guess....
The 99 outback pump is 100% the same other than that hard line thread into the pump.
So i just blew them apart and swapped out my dead bearing and installed the healthy 99 outback bearing.
Just make sure you dont put the back plate on upside down! I did that.... it will leak like crazy!
So in the end.
Fix my pump by grafting some parts from a working pump of similar vintage.
Works great now!
Thanks guys!
