Legacy 1st gen (ej22 engine), weird noise after accelerating AND just before idle

Hi guys!

I a have a beautiful 1993 Subaru Legacy wagon with ej22 engine, since couple of year i am listening a weird noise after i race the engine (it does not have to be many revs, with only a small push in the pedal, just after that and before the engine reach idle revs there is a noise, with the car in P and/or N

i have uploaded the sound in HQ so you can clearly notice it.

What can it be?

despite the noise, there is no other issue, no fumes, power is great, mileage too...

It kind of sounds like piston slap. Does it do when its cold and warm?

What kind and weight oil are you using?

It doesn't sound like the noise that I had which was lifters. Compare your noise to below video. Your noise sounds deeper than mine.

Along the same lines as Legacy777 when was the last time you changed oil and weight of oil?

last time i change the oil was 20 days ago i use 15w40 SL/CI-4 plus oil

and, nop, s not the same noise, yeah mine is deeper BUT also different because your noise is constant, mine only appears in the transition from high revs (with high revs i mean anything above idle)to idle.

it would be like this:

high revs ----------->the noise------>idle
it does not doit in any other way for example, if i accelerate, it doesnt do it, only when returning from high revs

idnle -----> high revs (no noise)

only when going down to idle, if idle is about 750rpm, it does it at about 900rpms.

i have a new question, is that video yours?
(because i downloaded it in HQ, i am starting collecting video like these because my cars are orphans, my mechanic died past December, and i dont trust trust in anybody, even the dealer (in this country) and i will have to start doing everythin by my self just like my other car

in order to better appreciate the noise, adjust the youtube video quality to maximum, since its not a video, it's just a sound with a photo it will not be affected by your internet speed.

if you listen to the video in the lowest quality (240p) you will NOT hear the noise, because the noise is more in the range of the mid highs freqs

It's either something internal to the engine....possibly piston slap or just loose tolerances due to wear. I don't think it's anything in the exhaust, but these cars do make some odd noises due to rattling exhaust shields.

You could try getting an oil analysis of your next oil change to see if anything looks abnormal. If not, I'd probably just suggest living with it, especially if everything is working fine.

Yes, it is my video. I'm with Legacy777, looks like it could be piston slap. Unfortunately I have never dealt with that so I have no experience with it and would try what Legacy777 suggested. Have your oil analyzed, how many miles does your engine have on it?

it has about 154k on it...........

Mine makes that noise too, even after an overhaul. I believe its piston slap or the piston rod bushings, but my internals are all original with std bore with a shit ton of miles on it. It makes a little noise, and haven't had any problems, it's just annoying.
