Lock actuator is not working properly in the rear gate. I've taken it out and lubed it real good but has a hard time unlocking. I have a few rear door actuators which look identical, but didn't work ( might be bad) at all. I was wandering if they are wired the same? Or do I need one from a rear gate?

From looking at the 90 Legacy wiring diagrams, the rear gate is wired differently on pins 3 & 4 (two bottom pins). The unlock and lock are swapped. Swap those two bottom pins around and see if it works.

I swapped the wires and no go. On the bench I could get it to work perfectly, when in to car only lock, no unlock. After playing around and testing both switches for 2 hours I put everything back and went to the next project.

My rear window defroster didn't work, and in the process of finding the problem for my defrost I also found the problem with the lock. I found two wires that was broke, it was in the wiring loom that goes between the body and the rear gate. Now it all works fine.

Ok, well good to hear you figured out what the problem was. I had similar issues with my 97 Impreza wagon. I fixed it once, it broke again, and then I ended up just pulling the wire further out and put a new wire in.

So what was the final setup that worked? Was it with the two pins swapped like I mentioned, or with the original pin configuration?

I put it all back to the original pin locations and the old actuator. Apparently everything was working fine except for the broken wires.
