Shiney stuff on JDM engines?

Possibly getting an EJ20G (off eBay, unless someone knows a better source). But what's that shiny crap some of the sellers put on there? It seems like some of the cheapest ones are the shiniest, which is a huge red flag to me. I feel like it's probably not good to have in the coolant tank or the intake, which are both often left open on the engines (in pictures, at least).

If it is shiney like oil, they might spray it to keep the engines from corroding.

That makes sense. Silicone isn't so bad.

Same thing some used car dealers do to make their cars look good to people who don't know much about engines. Those kind of people just pop the hood and go "Ooh, this car must be better than mine, the engine looks so shiny and well taken care of!"

Most dealers I've seen just pressure wash the engine and use some mother's stuff on the black pieces (which actually turns out looking really good and makes you wanna maintain it that way).

I'm just using the heads/intake/turbo/exhaust manifold and that stuff won't be hard at all to clean, so I guess it's really not a big deal regardless.

Yeah, it's a silicone based spray. I hate it! It just collects dirt and grime and makes everything nasty....but yes it looks nice a purdy for the customer.
