Subie wants to stall in traffic/at stops.

Hey Everyone,
I really need some help. I have a 92 ss that has had the AT rebuilt by a less than competent mechanic. It was rebuilt over a year ago now. When I got the car back it would rarely want to stall or lurch in traffic. I at attributed this to my harsh driving at times, or the A/C compressor ( the symptoms would stop as soon as I turned off the defrost/ac).
Then I thought that it might have jumped timing. I have spent hours counting teeth, and even took it to reliable mechanic who said the timing is fine.
Now it wants to stall almost everytime out. It does not matter whether it is wet or dry, cold or hot out. The only thing that seems to make a difference is whether or not it is in drive or neutral. It does not act up in neutral.
My thinking is that it is either the a/c compressor( it makes the air cold), or it could be a vacuum issue. I have not completely ruled out that the issue could be in the transmission.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Michael
