Subie wants to stall in traffic/at stops.

Hey Everyone,
I really need some help. I have a 92 ss that has had the AT rebuilt by a less than competent mechanic. It was rebuilt over a year ago now. When I got the car back it would rarely want to stall or lurch in traffic. I at attributed this to my harsh driving at times, or the A/C compressor ( the symptoms would stop as soon as I turned off the defrost/ac).
Then I thought that it might have jumped timing. I have spent hours counting teeth, and even took it to reliable mechanic who said the timing is fine.
Now it wants to stall almost everytime out. It does not matter whether it is wet or dry, cold or hot out. The only thing that seems to make a difference is whether or not it is in drive or neutral. It does not act up in neutral.

My thinking is that it is either the a/c compressor( it makes the air cold), or it could be a vacuum issue. I have not completely ruled out that the issue could be in the transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

It sounds like the idle air control valve is not compensating for load properly. You could try "cleaning" it by spraying brake fluid down the inlet hose. Another thing you may want to check is that the idle switch is adjusted properly.

Did the car do this before the trans rebuild?

I do suggest checking for vacuum leaks as you had planned.

Josh,
Thanks for the quick reply. It did do this rarely. Only recently has it started to happen every time. I will check over the things you mention and post a reply on Sunday.

Ok, so here is a bit of an update. In the process of getting to the plug for the idle control valve. I found that almost every piece of plastic is cracked or broken. I also found that the control valve is not operating within the parameters outlined in the link Josh sent me. I am now off to find some new/ used plastic. I will also adjust the throttle body sensor and hope that fixes things.

Just for clarity, what pieces of plastic are you referring to?

The intake pieces that are extruded plastic. They were cracked down the sides. Also the piece that the mass air flow sensor mounts to. Basically if it was part of the air intake system it was either cracked, broken, or dry rotted.
I went to Super Repair to see if I could locate some of the cracked pieces and Doug in used parts said that some of my problems could be from the MAF sensor. So I am going to check that out too.

Ok, so the intake pieces are cracked. Yes if this or the MAF sensor is bad, that could certainly be causing your problems.
