So I grew up always putting eating side down (handles up, even knives). I never did this for cleaning purpose just the fact of not touching the clean silverware when I go to grab it. If your dishwasher is working properly it should be hot enough to kill germs anyway. Enough on that.
So I have a roommate who works at the base with me on different aircraft. We are to completely different people from different places. I am from the southeast (Florida and Georgia) and he is from Colorado. Since I have been in the Coast Guard I have met a lot of people from different areas and it is kind of cool to see how different people can be. Like man I don't know if I would have gotten along with that guy in school and that sort of thing. Anyway, I come home and start to cook dinner as usual and open the dishwasher to put something away. As I open and go to reach in I see an orange knife is sticking up and immdiately yell my roommates name which of course he isn't there as we are on different shifts as well. I had enough as he does this everyother week, so I decide this time I am going to text him WTF!

Me: Please stop putting knives pointed up in the dishwasher.

Him: That's how they're supposed to sit. You don't want to damage the rack.

Me: No, that's how you slice your hand open.

Him: I think I am going to go with the way my parents have done it for 30 years before anyone else's way.
Keep your eyes open and be careful.

Me: You've out done yourself this time man, haha.

Him: You're the only one laughing.

Me: Yea because I am the only one at home.

Hope you enjoy our coversation, I get to have many just like this. Just curious how others do it and something you probably never paid attention to.

My wife and I apparently do it different, she puts all handles up but I put all handles down to save space (except knives).

Man Coast Guard school has dishwashers? When I was in, sonny, we had to x with y in the snow up hill both ways!

Anyways, I do sharp knives down, and everything else up. I don't have a dishwasher where I live now, but I put everything in the drying rack the same way.

Yup.

Well I clicked the wrong option because I wasn't paying attention. But none the less I have a few years experiance working in resturants. According to health code the handle side goes up to prevent contamination.

Handles down except knives.

I can see this maybe being an issue in a restaurant.....but if you're at home.....wash your damn hands before you unload the dishwasher......c'mon!

I do handles down, even knives. My wife does handles up, even knives. Our silverware rack is torn up at the bottom, as the knives slice into it very easily when its hot. After 6 years of marriage, such a thing isn't worth bothering her about though.

bottoms up for me all the time.

I make my kid do it!

All handles up for my house. Only time they aren't is if its a spatula or a very large spoon
