WRX fronts H6 Legacy rears on 1st Gen Legacy Wagon??

Post by Jake_ak_cent »

Can somebody help point me in the right direction here, I've been searching and searching but I keep coming up empty.

The car. 93 Subaru Legacy Wagon, 2.2L engine.

What I'm trying to do. Fit WRX front brakes and Legacy H6 rear brakes to the above listed car.
And I am trying to figure out if I need brackets or anything special to make this work. If anyone has a link to a write up showing the process, or knows what needs to be had to make this happen, please throw it out there. Anything at all will help and be greatly appreciated. And let me apologize in advance for my "noobish" search skills.

I have this exact setup on my Legacy. You just need the brackets that go with the wrx and h6 calipers. They bolt right up. You will need the rotors and pads as well.

Ok, I believe those brackets are coming with the set I just ordered so I should be all good then. How is your brake feel compared to stock with that setup?

It definitely improved but the pedal feels a little mushy due to the bigger calipers, but that is because my car is non abs so the master cylinder is smaller than an abs unit. If you have abs, it will be better. If you don't, you can use a fwd non abs SVX master cylinder. They are the same size as the Legacy/Impreza abs masters but are hard to find used.

Also need rear backing plates or cut the edge off the stock ones. The larger rotors will hit the backing plate. On mine I cut the spot welds out and welded the h6 outer cover, and kept my backing plate there so I didn't have to pull the hubs off.

I cut my backing plates off and never bothered putting new one's on.

Also, it goes without saying, but you will need larger wheels to fit the WRX & H6 brakes on your legacy.

Yea I've got a bunch of bigger wheels so that won't be a problem.

Here's a question though, are all 3rd gen legacy calipers the same? I have found through my researching that they all apparently have the larger rotors, and everywhere I'm finding calipers list that they are compatible with all engine sizes. Is this true?

No, not all 3rd gen legacy calipers are the same. Also, there was only 1 engine size for the 3rd gens.

Ok then how do I find the H6 specific calipers? Because everytime I look for them I keep pulling up calipers that say the work on all Legacys.

I have 00 outback calipers and brackets on mine. The break line position to the caliper is different but it works.

Thats what I thought man!

ok how do I find h6 calipers or will any 3rd gen legacy caliper work since all third gen legacys allegedly had the larger rotors even though according to the guy a couple posts above there were different types of calipers.

Everywhere I'm finding calipers for third gens they are stating that they work with all engine models, even when I specifically ask them if they will work for an h6 legacy (as that is the car the calipers are supposed to be coming from for the swap.)

Ha ha I goofed. Forgot about the h6. There's no ej20 in the states however. But yeah, check out Jamal's carefully compiled brake information thread in the brake stickys for what year 3rd gen has what.

I have 02 Legacy GT front and rear brakes. For that year, the fronts are the same as 02 WRX, and the rears are the same as H6 Legacy.

ok so I looked up Jamals thread, and it seems like it is saying calipers would be the same across all 3rd gen legacys. So I would be looking for calipers off any 3rd gen.
290x10mm
This is well known as the H6 rear rotor. The Legacy caliper is the same as most other 99-07 1-pot Subaru calipers so you can upsize to this rotor simply by purchasing the brackets and correct pads
The "H6" bracket is part number 26625AE000. It uses pad shape D770
Applications:
00-04 Legacy/Outback non-brighton
SVX (5x114.3)
D770:
2000-2004 Legacy
2005-2009 Legacy GT
1999-2002 Impreza
Am I reading that right? Because if so I can score some local 00 legacy calipers for cheap and then just get the "h6" brackets online or something.

If you're talking rears then yes. My post (albiet a bit misguided lol) earlier was referring to the fronts.

Has anyone upgraded to the 290x18mm rotors? And are they a vented rotor? Also what are the chances you can cram those or the regular H6 upgrade under some 15" wheels?

Yes they are vented. You need a different caliper and bracket. either the 05-09 LGT parts which bolt on the same way or 2-pots which need either a bracket or different backing plate.
