Gear Swap Q's

Hi there every one!

I have a sort of dumb question.....

I have 2 gearboxes i have found for basically free and want to do a gear swap on ONE of them.

I have a gear box out of a 96 outback and a 98 legacy GT

The 98 trans is totally toasted....1 gear let go and slowly took out everything!

The 96 trans is from a 2.2L is perfect!

BUT

HERE is my problem now.

I order a bunch of new gears for the 98 gt trans and i see now it looks to far gone. I would STILL need parts to fix it up.....

SO

Can i put the gears from a 2.5L trans into a 2.2L trans? It would just be SOO much easier!

They "look" the same from the outside other than the clutch a crap, but can i stick in a set of aftermarket gears into it??

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

If they physically fit on the shaft and the syncros match up and everything, you should be ok. The one thing though you would need to do is make sure the backlash on the gears are set properly and you have the proper shims installed. Hopefully someone else can chime in as well.

You might want to email or call AndrewTech, http://www.andrewtechautomotive.com They would likely be able to tell you since they do a lot of Subaru transmission work.
