Hi there!
I have a sorta dumb question to ask....
I should really know this answer but sadly i dont.......
I have found a working 95 Impreza 2.2L starter and wish to use it on my 98 2.5L legacy GT trans.
Both cars are MT!
Will it work???
Also.
I need a upgraded clutch for my 98 legacy gt trans.
What years of clutch to flywheel combos can one use???
I think i can use ANY 5MT clutch disc or flywheel from ANY push style trans?
Thanks!
Tom

All MT starters were interchangeable up to @ least '99, if not mid '00's - except maybe the 6-speed STi, etc.
Yes, as long as the FW and clutch/disk/PP/TO bearing are PUSH they'll work. I put an '06 WRX clutch/FW in my '98 Forester - no problem.
There are a few on NASIOC like the ACT HD that are low mileage used if you want to save a few $$.

Thanks wtdash!
That is exactly what i was after for a answer!
This next week im going to run down to my local speed shop and get a Clutch master fx300/350 clutch and a nice fly wheel of sorts.
Although im not sold on light weight flywheels.
I have been in many MANY subaru's with light weight fly wheels.
The seem to not do ALL the great. My buddy's 04 TS had one. It basically would stall out if you giver in 1st then let off to slow down...I think it was due to it being a NA vs. a turbo.
I have seen it also on a few 02-07 wrx but never on a sti.
So mainly on 02-07 wrx's and basically any NA subaru.
I think it due to the fact that new cars have a electronic throttle catch built in.
Any thoughts toward light weight flywheels???
Thanks!

I had a 13-14lbs light flywheel in my n/a 2.2 impreza. It sure spooled up quicker. It was also a gigantic pain in the ass in traffic. In general I liked it, but wish there was an intermediate size between 14lbs and the stock WRX one.
I have a 22lbs flywheel off an 02 WRX in my SS, but heard they went with a 28lbs in later years due to the lighter one being harder on your transmission or engine? Not sure.

mike-tracy.
How was the flywheel a pain in traffic??
Did the are basically shake like a grabby clutch?
Im still soo torn on the flywheel idea!
Im not sure that i will have transmission issues.
Im building a 98 leggy GT trans with a set of RA gears.
So ya 4.11's with a mad set of RA gears! Im sure the car will rip! Oo and dont forget the Rob tune!
As long as i get the right combo for the flywheel and clutch!
I was looking at the ACT flywheel and than seems to be fairly good overall.
So my planned combo:
98 4.11 GT trans with RA gears
Clutch master FX300/350 clutch kit
OEM machined flywheel
OR
98 4.11 GT trans with RA gears
Clutch master FX300/350 clutch kit
ACT light weight flywheel
Thoughs????

The lightweight would make the car shudder upon engagement pretty much every time. If I went really slow, I could get it to not shudder as much. I also had a grabbier ACT clutch, so I feel this was also a contributing factor.
In stop and go traffic, I would have to push in the clutch 4-8 times as much, as the car wants to die instantly as soon as the car slowed down. Finding a smooth balancing point like I can with a stock clutch was almost impossible. So yeah, my left calf was visibly bigger than the right
