Running rear calipers with different casting codes

Post by macipusy »

This is on a 93 TW on rear brakes. One caliper is 1415 casting code and the other is 1313. The calipers look slightly different as well. Is it ok to run calipers with different casting codes on different sides of the car?

I only need the actual piston. Would it be a better option to have the piston from the 1313 swapped over to the 1415 body?

How are the calipers different? The casting shouldn't be a real big issue as long as the pistons are the same and calipers are more or less the same.

There were some changes in the caliper design over the years and that was mainly due to how the pad is secured in the caliper bracket and the connection between the caliper and caliper bracket.

Yes....that is where the differences are, around the area with the pad. From the underside view (piston casting and fluid reservoir they look the same. I will throw a micrometer on the piston size to confirm.

More data on the caliper differences.

I am starting to think I received a caliper off of a n/a model....reasons being, the piston in the 1313 casting code caliper is 2mm smaller in diameter then my stock one, 30mm vs 32mm. In addition, the caliper bracket is too narrow for a vented rear rotor.

Did the Canadian turbo Legacies have the same rear brakes as USDM ones? It did come from Canada.

Yes, all the north american turbo legacies had the same rear brakes.

Only the sedan non-turbo rear caliper pistons are smaller, 1.374" (34.9 mm) vs. 1.5" (38.1 mm).

It does sounds like you got a non turbo caliper (possibly from a newer gen Subie if the pad type is different).

That is strange that I am measuring the OD piston diameter at 32mm on my OEM caliper.

If you're measuring the exposed portion of the caliper piston, it is smaller in diameter compared to what is inside the caliper. You can see what I mean in this pic.

Yes Josh....I discovered this when I started to do a closer inspection of the piston after reading your post. It is 38mm on the side which faces the fluid.
