Greasing the throwout bearing the hard way.

Has anyone had the pleasure of having to grease the throwout bearing after the trans was installed? From the noise I'm hearing I apparently didn't grease the bugger well enough.

I'm thinking of how I could go about getting that done without having to take the trans all the way out. I don't want to have to drain the trans cuz I put the extra expensive extra S in it and I have NOT gotten my $'s worth yet!

Any suggestions would be a godsend.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!!

Is this on your 90 Legacy?

Was it a new throw out bearing? Did you grease it all, if so where did you grease it?

Also, why do think you didn't grease it well enough?

You could probably slide the engine and trans apart a few inches to get in there. You really don't need to drain the fluid out of the trans to drop it. You'd just need to put a bag or something over the tail section to keep oil from draining out.

Yeah it's on my 90'.

I greased the input shaft but didn't know I needed to put the grease in the grove in the bearing. I probably didn't use the right kind of grease either.

It is a new bearing too.

I did the clutch job and used that grease that came with it and greased the shaft. A month after I did the clutch job it was time to swap trans and I used regular ball joint grease to grease the shaft.

Did you grease the pivot ball the clutch fork pivots on? That may be making the noise vs. the throw out bearing.

yea i wouldn't go dumping grease down there, if some of it ends up on the clutch you might ruin it. If its really that bad you might just have to back your trans off a bit

Put a paint can cap over the rear output of the trans.

If it where me, I would just pull the motor, then your just out some coolant, which can be caught in a clean bucket and strained before re-using.

Good point on pulling the motor DevC. For whatever reason that didn't dawn on me. It's soo much easier to pull the motor than the trans.

Time to go borrow a cherry picker!!
