Save it or kill it? (Now part III) Back on the road

So the test mule ( the car Rob used to make the converters) was sitting in the garage due to a clutch issue. Took it to PIA and Steve put a used 06 WRX shift assembly in it and replaced the connectors from the pedal to the clutch slave. It solved my issues completely. I drove it around the block and it was like a new car.
Then on the way home, the car eats 5th gear. Its like it slid off the end of the shaft. It goes into 5th but nothing is there.
The car has 260,000 on the odo. The paint is shot on top, ok on the sides and has two dents.
When I got it, I had to re-do quite a few things from the previous owner, so it has been gone through quite a bit: 4/2 pots, AWIC, re sealed the sunroof, rear VSLD, 02 WRX struts with JDM springs, 440's with the TD05 ( Had to due to Rob needing it for the tune) full 3 inch exhaust.
So I am into the car about $4500
So what should I do? If I just do the tranny, I don't think the engine is going to go past 300,000. But I need to keep this as cheap as possible.

I vote to swap the tranny and nothing else

Do a compression / leak down test for engine health b4 you do the trans...might give you some idea about the EJ22T's future.
GL,
TD
P.s. I'll buy the AWIC back if you do part it out

Not really worried about compression - its the headgaskets.

I say do a trans swap, and do the head gaskets now if you're worried about them.

I would love the air to water intercooler as well. However, if I were you, and I had the funds to get the work done, I would rebuild the trans and re-do the headgaskets. I would also perform the compression and leak-down test to see the overall condition of the engine.

Ok, since you guys said to save it, I am saving it. I have ordered a JDM 95 WRX Ej20G engine and transmission. ( Yes, the one with the 5th injector.) So it will be getting a newer engine and transmission soon. I will be keeping the AWIC and everything on it already. The transmission is a 3.9 FD, but being an RA tranny, it is like the STI 6 speed without the extra 6th gear overdrive. So it will be great for in-town racing and rallycross. ( I have a few better geared cars for highway travel)

Soooo, what's the plan for the engine that's in it right now?

Nice tranny and engine choice!. Let me know if you figure out how to control the 5th injector, I have one of those too.

Sadly I don't think I will be able to control the fifth injector. The PP6 on the other car has the ability to add an independent injector but it's not going in that car. I think it would be useful if I was nearing static on the injectors but that would be the only use.

I figure even with 550cc injectors, you'd need a rather large turbo to have a 'need' for a 5th.

Now, if you could isolate it for Meth injection, then it could be useful

OOO I like the way you think.

The 5th injector has a special fuel hardline that wraps around the back of the manifold down to normal under lines.

So based on the poll, I am going to save it, so I went shopping for a transmission and ended up with an engine AND a transmission
1995 WRX 20G RA.
Closed deck engine with the 5th injector.
Has the TD05-16G and the 440's so I don't have to do anything.
Previous owner upgraded to newer coil packs and the newer radiator fill can.
So I can assume the engine was loved, since the owner took the time to do good upgrades.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And a random piece of cool JDM bling I recently bought ( it has a Subaru part number)

Ok months later: the RA tranny is in. You really can't get the gist of the ratios until you drive it. The thing shifts like butter but it's highway days are over. 60mph in 5th is 3k Rpms. It is the Sti 6 spd minus the 6th gear. That 6th gear drops the highway speed almost 1000 Rpms. The gears are set up great for racing. So this car will be an in town car only. The 20g will be going in soon and since the previous owner was nice enough to go the upgraded cop and other mods I will put a list of what was done with pics when finished.

Drew, my sti tranny is the same way, except 5th was replaced with a usdm wrx 5th gear. Assuming my gps is accurate, I am doing 68mph at 3k rpm. There is a laughably large gap between 4th to 5th.

Even with what im pretty sure is the standard V1 WRX 4.11 5spd, mine is around 2700rpm at 60mph. The old Japanese transmissions were definitely not built with extended high-speed cruising in mind.

True. But since I have two cars one with the original tranny and one with the RA one I REALLY notice it.
I will post the ratios here in a day or so with the corresponding Mph comparison to stock.

That's interesting, i have n/a 4.11 internals in my ss trans. At 70mph im sitting around 3k rpm. Im quite happy with that tho.
So yours is gonna be the weekend warrior?

The lesson here people:
comparing a 4:44/3:90/4:11 transmission is pointless unless you have the gear ratios.
And this transmission is turning 1K more rpms at 70 and the ratios limit top speed to about 120

I know my trans has a 0.825 5th gear. A 0.738 5th would be really nice.
