Re: Mike's 92 SS

Post by mike-tracy »

Well I am happy to report I had some success this weekend! Saturday was shot due to working and helping install a dryer and tires on my mom-in-law's Forester. Sunday I grabbed some nearly new 16" tires and had them mounted on my Outback, and finally got around to the SS.

I had a 22t ecu with a revtronix ecu installed and the fuel pump wouldn't prime. So I tried my robtune ecu (with no ignition converter or anything) and the fuel pump instantly primed! I switched the revtronix chip over to my last 22t ecu and sure enough it primed the pump also! Turned the key and it caught! I have a solid week of stuff to do after work before the car is drivable. But this is a huge leap forward!

Also found that if the Revtronix "power mode" switch is installed backwards, and/or the chip is installed backwards (which is totally possible) the fuel pump also won't prime. This threw me for a loop with the good ecu as I don't have the Rev owners manual to know how it is supposed to be oriented.

I can't handle how low the car is. I have some STI springs, and they looked good on CJ's setup, so I'm gonna swap em on this weekend.

What do you have currently and what are you referring to when you say they looked good on my setup?

Keep in mind the recent setup you saw of mine is jdm pink springs on 04 sti struts.

Im talking about your older setup with the oem sti springs. Right now my car has Bilstein struts and unknown springs. Previous owner couldn't remember what they were.

Looks like that'll be in the way of my downpipe. There's got to be a way to keep my cruise control.

You need to swap over to a vacuum pump and actuator setup to keep cruise. The non-turbo cruise actuator that works off engine vacuum doesn't work too well when you get near and in positive manifold pressure ;)

Yes, that and when manifold get's near atmospheric pressure. The actuator won't work since one side of the diaphragm is exposed to atmosphere and the other to the intake manifold. You need a differential pressure for the diaphragm to move.

So among all my parts I didn't have any 90-91 tophats to work with the tapered 04 STI springs. I hit up all my friends and one had a set of FWD rears! I wasn't sure they'd work...but the price was right ($5) so I took the chance.

Image
On the left is the lowering spring with 92-94 top hats (notice the seperate perch from top hat design, and the non tapered spring top) VS the 04 STI and 91 one piece tophat.

Image
Assembled, just need some cleaning.

Image
Bonus pic on the way to work - most likely one of the Hatch Patrol guys.

I'll install these after work and take an "after" pic to compare ride heights.

After:

Visually it's not as aggressive but I love that I don't have to fear potholes and speedbumps lol. The STI springs seem to be a good match for the car's weight.

Tires are still the same size - 205/55/16

I left the car at Les Schwab for an alignment as my favorite place's machine is down.

Still to do:
-Fix MAF and knock sensor CEL's
-replace dying power steering pump
-Fix abs not-working issue
-Install the EBCS and wideband
-install black dash and door cards, A-pillar trim, center console
-Enjoy the damn thing!

Future plans:
(depending on how long I keep the car)
-pre-face front end
-awic
-install all my JDM/EDM/NZDM goodies ;)

Fixed most of the issues and adjusted my TPS. Still have ABS code 9 - "faulty motor and/or motor relay or broken or shorted harness circuit" and knock sensor code 22.

I resoldered and heat shrinked the comnector for thr KS. I may have some shielding touching the signal wire so I'm gonna redo it. I also installed a brand new KS.

Well, I was right, the knock sensor wire's copper shielding was touching the inner wire, by 1 or 2 threads. They are so tiny I didn't see em at first. Car runs really nice now. I had some on and off ramp fun - destroyed a civic SI and kept up with a 90s 740 bimmer. All at td05 wastegate pressure of 9PSI!

Now the car leaks coolant from under the TMIC, and the PS pump and ABS didn't magically fix themselves. Oh well, more stuff to do.

Do you have another PS pump or are you still in need? I've got a few laying around here.

Got motivated tonite to start my black dash swap. This is my 3rd time pulling a 1st gen dash, and I literally got it out in 30 mins! So easy compared to newer cars. I didn't have a center console or stereo to remove which certainly made things faster.

Image

I have to swap the wiring, brackets and etc over from the gray one.

Just wanted to say, I love the stock transmission's 5th gear. I put some extra-s in after verifying with the cheap stuff that it didn't leak. Total transformation!
